Belated Ring IV Thoughts

The fourth event held under the Ring Magazine banner titled Ring IV, which was held at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on November 22nd was promoted as a night of champions. It is indeed true that the event featured four world championship fights that produced a variety that just about every type of Boxing fan is bound to have an opinion on. The most dominant performance of the evening in the view of this observer was the one put forth by WBC/WBO Jr. Bantamweight world champion Jesse Rodriguez , who defended his title against WBA number one contender and former IBF Jr. Bantamweight world champion Fernando Martinez . After an opening round where Martinez seemed to narrowly get the better of the action and was able to land some hard punches particularly with his right hand, Rodriguez simply went to work. From the second round on, the champion put forth what can only be described as a “Masterclass" in displaying a full arsenal of Boxing skills. A display of lateral movement, ...

Belated Weekend Thoughts: Benavidez, Shields Shine In Separate Main Events

The first weekend of February 2025 featured what proved to be a grudge match between two unbeaten Light-Heavyweight contenders as both were looking to take the next and supposed final step towards challenging for a world championship, and was followed by a new chapter of Boxing history being written as a future Hall of Famer added another accolade to her already stellar legacy. First, it was the Light-Heavyweight battle between undefeated former WBC Super-Middleweight world champion David Benavidez and unbeaten top Light-Heavyweight contender David Morrell, which took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. The main event of the latest Prime Video pay-per-view card promoted by the Premier Boxing Champions group of promoters did not disappoint as what appeared to be a dislike between the two fighters in the lead up to the encounter, which more often than not and for better or worse, is used as a way to promote fights, manifested into a grueling back and forth battle between two ...

Benavidez-Morrell: Will The Winner Get A Shot At Alvarez?

As 2025 has now begun, Boxing’s 168lb. Super-Middleweight division is still dominated by one fighter, the once and perhaps future Undisputed king of the division Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who still reigns as the division’s unified world champion, despite having relinquished the IBF world championship due to his decision to face top contender Edgar Berlanga last September, rather than the International Boxing Federation’s top contender William Schull, who was due in the rotation of mandatory challengers that subsequently made up the Undisputed Super-Middleweight championship of the world. Schull went on to win the IBF crown and could still face Alvarez at some point this year in what would be a rarity in Boxing, a reunification bout involving a title that was given up by one of the champions involved due to circumstances that can only be summed up as the politics that be in the sport of Boxing. Two fighters, however, that have been angling for a shot at Alvarez for some time will instead ...

Taylor Becomes Undisputed Champion In Two Weight Divisions, Benavidez Breaks Down Andrade

Thanksgiving weekend 2023 in the world of Boxing was highlighted by two marquee attractions on November 25th in the Women's Jr. Welterweight and Men's Super-Middleweight divisions. First, it was a highly anticipated rematch for the Undisputed Women’s Jr. Welterweight championship of the world as undefeated champion Chantelle Cameron attempted to score her second victory in a six month span by giving Undisputed Lightweight world champion Katie Taylor a second opportunity to become an undisputed world champion in two weight divisions. In some ways, this rematch offered little upside for the defending champion beyond perhaps a good payday as well as a chance to prove that her victory over Taylor in the first fight was not a case of her catching Taylor on an off night. The second encounter would take place at the same location as the first fight, the 3 Arena in Dublin, in Taylor's home country of Ireland. As this observer pointed out in previewing this fight, despite Taylor hav...

Benavidez-Andrade Take Boxing's Spotlight On Thanksgiving Weekend 2023

There are several weekends throughout the calendar year that Boxing fans look forward to every year. Whether it be on the fourth of July weekend, Cinco De Mayo, or Mexican Independence Day weekend to name a few, there is always at least one Boxing event that draws interest. One holiday weekend that is normally associated with great food, parades, NFL Football, and of course, shopping as the official beginning of the Christmas holiday season, is Thanksgiving weekend here in the United States. While the aforementioned activities will always be first in mind for many, one aspect of Thanksgiving weekend that at times can be overlooked is that it has periodically also been a destination for Boxing. The 2023 Thanksgiving weekend will be headlined by a battle between two undefeated former world champions in an intriguing Super-Middleweight elimination bout. Former WBC Super-Middleweight world champion David Benavidez will meet former two-division world champion Demetrius Andrade in a WBC elim...

Benavidez-Plant Thoughts

As strictly a Boxing match, the encounter between former Super-Middleweight world champions David Benavidez and Caleb Plant checked a lot of boxes that a Boxing fan looks for in the lead up to the fight. A clash of styles that when matched against each other was likely to produce a competitive fight. A rivalry between the two fighters that appeared to grow into legitimate bad blood, and the sub-plot of potentially getting another opportunity to fight for a world championship. With the fight fan's list of what to look forward to checked off, it was time for the two fighters to converge on the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV on March 25th to do battle.  In previewing this bout, this observer stated that it would likely come down to whether or not Plant would be able to deal with the punching power and hand speed of Benavidez. It was also crucial in my eyes that Benavidez not allow Plant, a fighter known for his elusiveness, to be able to set the tempo of the fight and could n...

Benavidez-Plant Preview

On Saturday, March 25th, two former world champions will enter the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV with the goal of taking one step closer to challenging once more for a world championship. This observer is referring to the encounter between David Benavidez and Caleb Plant. Two fighters who each know what it is to be a world champion in the talent-deep 168lb. Super-Middleweight division. A division currently ruled by Undisputed world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. While the goal of both men is obviously an eventual fight with Alvarez, the encounter between the two, which will headline a pay-per-view card broadcast by Showtime Pay-Per-View here in the United States, could possibly be one of the best fights of the year. The reason for that is it is an interesting clash of styles between two boxer/punchers, but one who is more noted for his punching power than the other. David Benavidez is a former WBC Super-Middleweight world champion. He also has a rare d...

Did Benavidez Make A Convincing Argument?

It should be no surprise to anyone who has followed the sport of Boxing for any extended period of time when yours truly says that it is a sport that does not necessarily have a fair structure when it comes to fighters getting the type of opportunities that one could say that they deserve. To be more specific, opportunities that are not only against the top fighters in the sport, but perhaps more importantly, fights that offer the kind of pay days that could be considered life changing. In recent weeks, the biggest story that has circulated around the sport and by far, the topic most discussed amongst fans and experts alike, has been WBA World Light-Heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol’s twelve round unanimous decision over current Undisputed Super-Middleweight world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Despite a clear victory in retaining his title for the ninth time, Bivol’s victory over Alvarez has no barring at least for now with regard to the Undisputed world championship that Alvarez hol...

Thoughts On Recent Action:March 10th-13th, 2021

As is sometimes the case in the sport of Boxing, it can be a challenge for one to keep track on everything that goes on day to day. While this observer certainly does his best to cover events as they take place, there are times when circumstances warrant that events be covered/discussed in summary-form. This column will discuss some of the events in the Boxing world that took place between the days of March 10 th  and March 13 th . Although Welterweight  Lewis Crocker’s victory over  Deniz Ilbay , which took place in Bolton, England also took place during this period of time, the reader will be taken on a journey of sorts that will begin with a card in Uncasville, CT, venture to one that took place in Bangkok, Thailand, which featured the return of a former world champion, to Dallas, TX for two highly anticipated rematches, all the way back to Uncasville, CT where an intriguing Super-Middleweight encounter closed the week of events.   Our journey begins on Mar...
