Will Miller Fight For A World Championship In 2019?

As the year 2018 nears its conclusion, one of the central stories in the sport of Boxing remains the question of whether or not the Heavyweight division will determine an Undisputed world champion in 2019 with undefeated current world champions Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua being the main subjects that surround the question. Of course, the answer to that question will likely not be answered before the end of the year as the main focus of the division will focus on Deontay Wilder's upcoming defense of his WBC crown against undefeated former Heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury on December 1st in Los Angeles, CA. While the obvious question that will be asked of the winner of that fight will be whether or not they will fight Joshua next, there are other possible opponents that could be an option for either the Wilder-Fury winner or Anthony Joshua that could throw a monkey wrench into potential plans to fully unify the Heavyweight division.

One possible opponent is undefeated top Heavyweight contender Jarrell Miller. Miller, who is affectionately known as “Big Baby” has spent the last several years climbing the ranks of the division and emerging as a possible threat to either Wilder or unified IBF/WBA/WBO/IBO world champion Anthony Joshua. The native of Brooklyn, NY amassed an impressive record of 21-0-1, with 18 Knockouts before his encounter last month with former two-division world champion Tomasz Adamek in Chicago.

Although on paper Adamek had the credentials and experience that one would assume could present a test for Miller, the forty-one year old Adamek, who had previously held world championships in both the Light-Heavyweight and Cruiserweight divisions in his career before a lengthy run as a Heavyweight contender, was simply over matched. Miller used his bigger size and punching power to stop Adamek in two rounds.

The win over the “Game”, but over matched Adamek while in some ways expected did little in terms of answering questions that some might have regarding Miller. Despite his impressive record and having a career knockout percentage of over 80%, Miller much like most fighters who earn a reputation as a “Knockout Artist” has been asked the question of who might be able to provide a significant test.

One month after his victory over Adamek the undefeated contender was back in the ring as he faced fellow unbeaten Heavyweight Bogdan Dinu on November 17th at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, KS. This was a rarity in some ways for fighters who are viewed as emerging top contenders in this era for a fighter in Miller’s position to be back in the ring so soon after his previous outing. From an old-school perspective however, this fight offered Miller an opportunity to both stay busy and continue to generate interest as he looks for a potential opportunity to fight for a world title.

As someone who is a Boxing journalist and historian, I am in favor of fighters being as active as possible as it has the benefits previously mentioned, but more importantly, allows the fighter to maintain a sharpness by competing often. While it is not uncommon to see a top contender or a world champion in the current landscape of the sport competing between one to three times a year, I wish more fighters took the approach of being willing to fight as much as they can. A scenario like this can however, present an element of danger.

In this case, Miller was facing a fighter in Dinu who like himself was undefeated. The Romanian-born and based Dinu was however, largely unknown to most Boxing fans having fought his previous eighteen professional fights in Romania and Canada. Despite an impressive record of 18-0, with 14 Knockouts heading into the bout with Miller, Dinu had not previously faced any noteworthy opposition and this fight represented a clear step up for him against a fighter rated in the top ten in both the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the World Boxing Association (WBA). Beyond this being a stay busy fight for Miller and a bout that would answer what Bogdan Dinu had to offer, this bout for the vacant North American Boxing Organization (NABO) Heavyweight championship, a regional championship affiliated with the WBO also represented an opportunity for the winner to potentially put himself in line for a shot at a world championship.

Miller outweighed Dinu by seventy-eight pounds and the weight difference was immediately apparent in the early stage of the fight. Dinu however, did have some success in being able to land his jab, mix in combinations, and use lateral movement in an attempt to evade the constant pressure of Miller. The pressure of Miller as well as his heavier punches, gradually broke Dinu down as Miller was able to score two knockdowns, due largely to the gradual work he had done to Dinu’s body to earn a fourth round knockout victory.

There simply wasn't much to say about this fight. It was a story of one fighter gradually walking his opponent down and breaking the opponent down. While the victory was not one that would fuel immediate demand for Miller to face one of the world champions in the Heavyweight division in his next fight, the question is will he get the opportunity to fight for a world championship in 2019?

The somewhat ironic thing about Miller’s position currently in the division is while fans may not be saying this fighter deserves to fight a world champion in his next fight, that might exactly be what happens. It is important to note that Miller is not just rated in the top ten in both the WBA and WBO Heavyweight rankings, but he is rated in the top five in both organizations. What makes the possibility of Miller fighting for at least a portion of the World Heavyweight championship sooner rather than later a real possibility is those top five rankings are by organizations whose world championships Anthony Joshua currently holds as part of his unified crown.

Joshua has an open date to defend his unified world championship at Wembley Stadium in London, in April 2019. If a bout between Joshua and the winner of the upcoming Wilder-Fury fight to determine an Undisputed Heavyweight world champion is not made for next April, there are a few reasons why one could say that Jarrell Miller might be a front-runner to face Joshua.  In Joshua’s last fight in September, he successfully defended his crown against WBA number one rated contender Alexander Povetkin in Wembley Stadium.

While it is unlikely at least in this observer’s view that the WBA would mandate Joshua to face the highest available contender, in this case Miller, immediately after fulfilling his annual mandatory title defense obligations in regard to the WBA, the possibility definitely exists that Miller, who is currently rated number four by the WBO could be chosen as an elective defense for Joshua. The reason for this is current WBO number one contender Dillian Whyte is scheduled to face longtime top contender Dereck Chisora in a rematch of their December 2016 bout, on December 22nd in England.

While Chisora will enter the fight rated number eleven by the WBO, it is obvious that the respective rankings, which are updated regularly, will be updated following that fight. Depending on the outcome of that fight, the possibility of Miller’s current standing in the WBO rankings being elevated is there. In regard to Miller possibly being chosen as an elective defense for Joshua in the event that a fight with the Wilder-Fury winner is not signed, there was also a verbal altercation between Joshua and Miller at the July press conference announcing the U.S. launch of the DAZN digital streaming network. Obviously while such altercations are unnecessary, what they do is generate buzz and with both Miller and Joshua being prominently featured in the first months of DAZN’s U.S. expansion, it makes sense that a fight between the two would be something that not only fans would be interested in, but from a business perspective, a fight between the two would naturally entice those who are not currently subscribers to DAZN to subscribe.

Whether or not a fight to determine the Undisputed World Heavyweight championship will take place in 2019 is something that remains to be seen. Jarrell Miller has established himself as a contender for either world champion in the division and while full unification remains on most “Boxing Wishlists” including this observer’s, I cannot see Miller being kept from an opportunity for a world championship for much longer. The question is not if Miller will fight for a world championship, but when. The year 2019 just might be the time that it will happen.

Moloney-Paulino Set For Dec. 14th In Perth

Credit: Dragon Fire Boxing
Press Release: November 17, 2018 by Dragon Fire Boxing – WBA #4, WBC #4 , WBO #9 IBF #11, Undefeated Andrew “The Monster” Moloney (18 – 0) returns to the ring for his final outing of 2018.

Moloney is also rated #6 by Ring Magazine, the highest rated Australian along with brother Jason #7 and Jeff Horn at #9.

Moloney the WBA Oceania, Commonwealth & OPBF Super Flyweight Champion takes on WBA Asian Super Flyweight Champion Cris “The King Paulino (19-3). The bout will be the headline bout of Dragon Fire Boxing’s “Thunderdome 28 Event in Perth Western Australia.

The fighting pride of Manilla, Paulino is riding high on a 5 fight win streak and is no stranger to fighting in Australia previous taking on future hall of famer “The Ragin Bull” Vic Darchinyan in his last defeat. Paulino also fought current WBA #8 and former WBA World Champion Koki Eto in Japan over 10 grueling rounds.

“My preparation has been great for this fight so far.  I didn’t have any time off after my last fight as I was straight back in the gym to help my brother prepare for his World Title fight.  I got some good sparring while we were over in Orlando for Jason’s fight and I am feeling great.

I’m excited to be fighting in Perth and I can’t wait to fight on Thunderdome at Metro City. I have never been to the venue before but I have watched the fights from there on TV and the atmosphere looks great! I’m really looking forward to it.

I have fought in Perth a few times as an amateur.  The last time I fought in Perth I had a great win over the WBC #1 bantamweight contender Duke Micah from Ghana.

We have studied my opponent Cris Paulino and we expect a very tough fight from him.  It will be good experience for me fighting against a southpaw as this is only the second southpaw I have faced in my professional career.

I’m excited to be fighting against a fellow WBA champion.  My team has made offers to all the WBA rated fighters, including the current World Champion Kal Yafai.  I really hope I get the opportunity to fight Yafai next for the World Title.
It’s disappointing to see that he is fighting a guy rated at #14 in his next fight.

2019 is looking to be a very exciting year for me and my team.  I really hope I get the opportunity to fight for the World title and achieve my dream of becoming World Champion and would love to do it in Australia for my country” – states “The Monster” Andrew Moloney

Examining The Middleweight Division Heading Into 2019

There have been few occasions throughout it’s illustrious history where Boxing's Middleweight division has not been a topic of discussion and/or debate among Boxing fans and experts. Of course, many knowledgeable fans can probably sit for hours talking about some of the greatest fights the division has seen over many decades. An element that also is a consistent topic of discussion with regard to the Middleweights is how the landscape changes from time to time.

In recent times, the Middleweight division has appeared as though it might be heading towards a period of transition. A transition that in some ways is not unlike the transition that has been taking place in the Heavyweight over the last several years. What happens that leads to such a process taking place? More often than not, the process is set in motion by the end of the reign of a longtime champion.

As many fans are aware, such an event did in fact happen in September when Gennady Golovkin, the undefeated long-reigning unified WBA/IBO/WBC Middleweight world champion lost his crown and suffered the first defeat of his career when he lost a razor thin decision in his rematch with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Although many including this observer felt that Golovkin had done enough to win that fight and retain his world championship, the loss to Alvarez disputed or not along with other events appeared to trigger the beginning of a transition period for the division. While this observer will discuss the obvious potential of a third encounter between Golovkin and Alvarez later in this column, what is interesting is how the two bouts between the two have had an effect on the rest of the division either directly or indirectly.

One thing that was impacted by the two bouts between Golovkin and Alvarez was that it in part broke a unification process that had gradually been taking place with Golovkin unifying portions of the World Middleweight championship. A process where Golovkin successfully unified the crowns of the World Boxing Association (WBA), the International Boxing Organization (IBO), the World Boxing Council (WBC), and the International Boxing Federation (IBF).

Although it appeared for a time that Golovkin was eventually going to face undefeated World Boxing Organization Middleweight world champion Billy Joe Saunders to determine an undisputed world champion in the division, Golovkin’s loss to Alvarez as well as events and circumstances that took place both before and after the second Golovkin-Alvarez encounter have changed the landscape of the division significantly. First, due in part to mandatory title defense obligations as well as the delay in the second fight between Golovkin and Alvarez taking place, Golovkin was stripped of the IBF crown. The vacant IBF Middleweight world championship will be on the line on Saturday, October 27th when undefeated IBF number one contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko will face longtime top Middleweight contender Daniel Jacobs at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

The WBO meanwhile has also seen a shift in regard to it’s portion of the World Middleweight championship. As most Boxing fans likely know, Billy Joe Saunders was recently denied a Boxing license by the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission due to his testing positive for a banned substance as part of the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) randomized testing program prior to his scheduled bout against undefeated former WBO Jr. Middleweight world champion Demetrius Andrade, who was the WBO's number one Middleweight contender.

Saunders being denied a license prevented him from making his scheduled defense against Andrade on October 20th at the TD Garden in Boston. Saunders opted to relinquish the WBO championship before the organization could make a ruling on whether to strip him of the championship. This put Andrade in a position to fight for the vacant crown by facing undefeated WBO number two rated contender Walter Kautondokwa on the scheduled date of what would have been the bout against Saunders.

In a bout where he was able to score three knockdowns, Andrade dominated a very “Game” Kautondokwa to win a twelve round unanimous decision and become a two-division world champion. Although it remains unclear as of this writing as to what Andrade’s future plans might be, it would not surprise yours truly if an attempt is made to resign a bout between Andrade and Saunders, assuming the undefeated former world champion is able to resolve his licensing issue in the state of Massachusetts. If the ruling of the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission remains in place, one could assume that it could create an obstacle assuming the native of Hatfield, England wants to face Andrade here in the United States. There is also a possibility that Andrade could seek a fight with the winner of the upcoming IBF championship fight in what would be a unification bout.

The future plans of Saul Alvarez could also have an impact on the Middleweight division, which could change the landscape of the division even further. One of the biggest stories in the sport over the last week was the news that Alvarez and his promoter Golden Boy Promotions had signed a landmark five-year eleven bout deal for Alvarez with DAZN, the multi-sport digital streaming network, which launched in the United States on September 10th after successful launches in several countries internationally.

Although the particulars of the deal, which also includes Golden Boy’s stable of fighters is a subject that will be discussed here on the website in the coming weeks, Alvarez will make his debut on DAZN as he moves up in weight to face top Super-Middleweight contender Rocky Fielding. The fight, which will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY will be for interim/regular status in the WBA’s Super-Middleweight ratings currently held by Fielding.

In terms of the 160lb. Middleweight division, if Alvarez is successful in that fight he will move into a mandatory challenger position to potentially face recently crowned WBA world champion Callum Smith, who won the recently concluded World Boxing Super Series Super-Middleweight tournament. If such a scenario were to play out, it could open the WBC and WBA world championships that Alvarez currently holds in the Middleweight division up.

For the World Boxing Association, if Alvarez were to opt to remain in the 168lb. Super-Middleweight division following his fight with Fielding, it is logical to assume that the WBA will name top contender Rob Brant, who scored a twelve round unanimous decision over Ryota Murata, the WBA’s top Middleweight contender on October 20th in Las Vegas, the new WBA Middleweight world champion. Even though the WBA has taken its share of criticism for it’s designation of “Regular” and “Interim” championship designations in their rankings, and such labels can create confusion among Boxing fans, such designations which this observer refers to as “Interim/Regular Status” does serve a purpose particularly in situations such as the possibility of Alvarez staying at Super-Middleweight after his fight with Rocky Fielding as it will fill a vacancy that would be left by the champion, in this case Alvarez choosing to relinquish the championship if Alvarez does indeed choose to stay at Super-Middleweight.

As for the WBC championship, it was announced at their recent annual convention that it had ordered a bout between it’s top Middleweight contender Jermall Charlo and former champion Gennady Golovkin to determine a mandatory challenger for Alvarez, should Alvarez elect to move back down to Middleweight after the fight with Fielding. Whether or not Charlo and Golovkin will meet in 2019 to determine a mandatory challenger in the WBC Middleweight ratings remains to be seen. Whether or not the situation in regard to the WBC's portion of the World Middleweight championship will eventually lead to a third encounter between Alvarez and Golovkin remains to be seen.

The changing landscape of the Middleweight division however, much like the changing landscape of the sport overall will remain a hot topic of discussion going forward. Whether the division will move closer to determining an undisputed champion in the coming year also remains to be seen.
