Updated Coronavirus Boxing-Related Cancellations/Postponements 4/26/2020

As the Covid-19/Coronavirus epidemic continues to impact the world, the sport of Boxing has continued to see postponements and cancellations. Over the last week, the Japanese Professional Boxing Commission (JBC) and the Japanese Professional Boxing Association (JPBA) announced an extension of its previous announcement of not staging any professional or amateur Boxing and other combat sports events through the month of May to now cover the month of June.  Similarly, promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank Inc has cleared his company’s scheduled events through the month of June.

The Florida Boxing Hall of Fame (FBHOF) has announced that it’s annual induction weekend, which was scheduled to take place during the month of June in Tampa, FL, has been rescheduled to August 21st-23rd, 2020 and will still take place at the Westshore Grand Hotel in Tampa, FL. For more information about the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame please visit: www.floridaboxinghalloffame.com

Although numerous promoters have hinted at the possibility of resuming their respective scheduled events behind closed doors with no crowds, there have been no official announcements as of this writing. There was however, one Boxing card that took place in Managua, Nicaragua on Saturday night at the Polideportivo Alexis Arguello. Fans attending the event observed social distancing guidelines and everyone attending the event were required to wear face masks with the exception of fighters who were competing. It is obviously unclear as to whether this card, which was promoted by former two-division world champion Rosendo Alvarez’ Bufalo Boxing Promotions, will serve as somewhat of a blueprint for the sport as to how events will be staged once things are allowed to resume in various portions of the world.

As has become the norm during this epidemic, we will continue to keep readers updated as to any cancellations/postponements, and rescheduling in condensed-form. Additional Boxing-related content sent to us from promoters and networks for release will continue to be made available.

Updated Coronavirus Boxing-Related Postponements/Cancellations 4/20/2020

As the world continues to deal with the Coronavirus epidemic, Boxing-related information has become somewhat sporadic due largely to several Boxing promoters globally heeding the advice of government officials to postpone or cancel their upcoming scheduled cards that has seen several months of what would normally be an active Boxing schedule become inactive. Over the last week however, there was some news that can be seen as both controversial as well as provide a potential path forward towards the resumption of combat sports including Boxing.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis deemed World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) as an essential service on April 13th. This allows WWE, as one of the few entities that has been able to remain active during the epidemic, to continue producing television content from its performance center training facility in Orlando, FL. What makes this a potential path for Boxing and  other combat sports to resume within the state is that events could theoretically be held in a similar fashion to what WWE has done in producing their television programming in a closed set without an audience. While there is no word as of this writing as to any potential cards that could take place, Spanish language television network Telemundo has announced that it has postponed its planned Boxeo Telemundo spring series choosing instead to air classic content on its network throughout the month of May.

Although  there remains optimism amongst both promoters and networks across the world that Boxing will be able to resume in the coming months, a dilemma that all will likely face will be whether or not to stage cards without spectators, which may effect financial figures for all involved. As of this writing, major sports leagues around the world have not officially announced plans to resume their respective schedules however Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Hockey League (NHL), and the National Basketball Association (NBA) remain in discussions regarding potential plans.

We will continue to keep readers updated in condensed-form on Boxing-related information as it becomes available.

Callanan, who is trained by world-renowned training team consisting of 'El Tigre' Tony Nobbs, Angelo Hyder and Craig Wilson weighed in on signing with Dragon Fire Boxing.

'The Mechanic' said, "I am delighted to be linking up with Tony Tolj and Dragon Fire Boxing. Dragon Fire Boxing have been world leaders for looking after their fighters from all over the world as a whole, so it's fantastic to be a part of such a great team that really can take fighters to the top and I'd like to thank Tony Tolj for giving me the opportunity to work with Dragon Fire Boxing.

"I am grateful to be be around the likes of Andrew and Jason Moloney, Bruno Tarimo and Billel Dib on a daily basis is only making me a better fighter. They are all top class fighters so I enjoy being around them and they really bring the best out of me and motivate to become the best fighter I can be.

We have the best team going between fighters and trainers we share plenty of laughs and good vibes we all train hard but we enjoy ourselves. I have been training with Tony Nobbs since I was about 19, Tony has helped mentor me into the man I am today and guided me away from a bad lifestyle and when Angelo Hyder moved over here I think I was about 22 at the time he and tony started working together and Angelo has spent a lot of his time helping to guide me to where I am today as well which is awesome I feel like I have 2 of the best coaches in the country in their own rights also Craig Wilson from rival has spent a lot of time working with myself and the other boys hes a top bloke and top

They are top-class trainers so to work with them on a daily basis is only going to improve me more so.

I'm dropping down to the light heavyweight moving forward and I believe that fight fans will see the best of me at that weight and I will win titles when the times right and I trust my team to make that decision on when I should fight for a title. I am enjoying learning and improving and I am happy to wait for the right opportunity.

Callanan is nicknamed the mechanic due to his profession away from the ring. The Australian light heavyweight opened up about how he balances two professions. "It's not the easiest thing to do but I enjoy both of my jobs. I'm just a common man who works hard with his hands but with boxing so I don't really think of it as a job, its a labor of love.

"I'm a working-class man and I love how life has turned out and I'm happy so I want to continue working hard in and out of the ring and hopefully, my boxing career will be laced with Goldust. I'm really living the Australian dream".

Over the last week, the Boxing world has continued to see a significant interruption in what would otherwise be an active schedule throughout the entire sport due to the ongoing Coronavirus epidemic. Among the announcements over the last week were an announcement that the Japanese Professional Boxing Commission (JBC) intended to resume its schedule of events in Japan during the month of May. Soon after making their intention known, the commission reverted to its existing decree that Boxing in the country would not be resuming until further notice.

This was followed by announcement made by Sampson Boxing that their scheduled April 24th card in Las Vegas, NV at the Cannery Casino and Hotel has been postponed. Following up on their previous announcement that they have cancelled all of their scheduled events during the month of April, Matchroom Boxing has cancelled all of their scheduled events for the month of May as well as postponed the scheduled World Heavyweight championship fight between Anthony Joshua and mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev, which was scheduled to take place in England in June. As of this writing, no intended rescheduled date has been announced.

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has continued its ban of all combat sports events through the the month of May. This has subsequently caused a second postponement of the planned Jr. Welterweight world championship fight between unified WBC/WBO world champion Jose Ramirez and former WBC world champion Viktor Postol, which was originally scheduled to take place during the month of January in Haikou, China. The intended rescheduled date of May 9th in Fresno, CA will now be postponed to a date and venue that has not been announced as of this writing.

The 2020 International Boxing Hall of Fame weekend originally scheduled for the June 11th-14th in Canastota, NY has been postponed. The class of 2020 will be inducted along with the 2021 class during the 2021 Hall of Fame induction weekend scheduled for June 10th-13th, 2021. Similarly, the Illinois Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremony scheduled for Friday, April 24th has been postponed. As of this writing, no rescheduled date has been announced.
