Daniel Jacobs

“Excited to back in the ring with a great opportunity against Julio Cesar Chavez to show my skills in the super middleweight division. It’s an opportunity to be strong, and go inside the ring fully healthy, no excuses outside. I think this will be my show. This is a perfect caliber opponent, and complements my style very well. This sport can be very unforgiving, and the thrill can be gone. My dear friend Patrick Day, I lost a great friend of mine. It’s really hard to move forward, but I will always have him in the back of my mind. Boxing is not the same, but I want to maximize my full potential. I look forward to continuing in the super middleweight division, and I’ll see you all Dec. 20.”

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

“I’m so happy to be here and this opportunity given to me. I’m going to be ready, and I’m going train hard for this fight. I’m very happy about this fight.”

Eddie Hearn

“This is a huge fight to end the year. The last few weeks we have seen fight of the year candidates continuously. On Dec. 20, we cap off with a fantastic fight. Danny Jacobs coming off a great fight against Canelo Alvarez, losing his IBF Middleweight belt, now moving up to 168, which I think will be a brilliant division for him. And Julio Cesar Chavez who has had his ups and down, now gets a great opportunity to fight where his father last fought.”

Joe Markowski, EVP DAZN NA

“Fight season continues. And Jacobs vs. Chavez Jr. will be a spectacular way to close out 2019. In the final four months of the year, our subscribers were treated to who’s who of boxing’s best:
Canelo, Kovalev, GGG, Anthony Joshua, Andy Ruiz, Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia, Josh Taylor, Regis Prograis – and now we add Jacobs and Chavez Jr.

It’s a fascinating fight between high-profile former champions and we think it will create a lot of buzz within the boxing community.”

The KSI-Logan Paul Rematch: Good For Boxing?

The sport of Boxing is one that doesn’t not have a standard schedule or a “Season” if you will. For a sport that runs fifty-two weeks a year, there is certainly no shortage of events for the Boxing fan to view. While there are certain marquee attractions that take place throughout a calendar year featuring some of the best fighters in the sport squaring off against each other that generates the interest of not only the Boxing enthusiast, but also the casual observer, there are also times where curiosity alone is enough to draw interest.

One of those events will take place this weekend as YouTube stars KSI and Logan Paul will make their respective professional debuts in an anticipated rematch in the main event of a professional Boxing card at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. The card, which will be broadcast in the United States and several international countries by digital subscription sports streaming network DAZN as well as on Sky Box Office Pay-Per-View throughout the United Kingdom has had no shortage of both interest and criticism from within the sport.

The criticism stems from the fact that two men will be headlining a professional Boxing card in the first professional fight for both. Although some have called this as nothing more than another “Celebrity Boxing” event, why has there been so much interest in this fight? First, it is not the first time these two men have met inside a Boxing ring.

In August of last year, the two YouTube stars met in an amateur bout that was broadcast on YouTube Pay-Per-View in Manchester, England. The fight, which ended in a six round majority draw, was fought with headgear. Although this did not differ much from what most think of when they think of “Celebrity Boxing” bouts, the card generated over 1.5 million buys between both live and on demand purchases. The strength of those numbers, a draw, and a continued animosity between each other has now led to the rematch.

Unlike the first encounter however, this fight will be fought under professional rules as both men agreed to formally turn professional, which mainly means there will be no protective headgear. While this has generated significant criticism, the question is will this be good and beneficial for Boxing? As a Boxing journalist and historian, the announcement of this rematch was something that stirred mixed feelings for this observer.

On one hand, it is understandable particularly among traditionalists as ti why this bout would rub people the wrong way. After all, it is not often one sees a professional fight featuring two fighters making their respective pro debuts as the main event of a Boxing card that features two world championship fights. The fight, which will be a six round Cruiserweight bout will also feature undefeated two-division world champion Billy Joe Saunders defending his WBO Super-Middleweight world championship against undefeated contender Marcelo Coceres and undefeated  Lightweight contender Devin Haney facing Alfredo Santiago in a bout that will determine interim/regular champion status in the World Boxing Council (WBC) Lightweight ratings.

As understandable as the criticism of some regarding the KSI-Logan Paul rematch might be, it is important to remember on the other hand that both men have significant social media followings and YouTube subscribers. While this may not seem like something that should be considered a factor, it is of equal importance to point out that the sports world is experiencing a transition in how consumers choose to watch sports content thanks largely to the success of digital subscription networks DAZN and ESPN+.

Although staging this fight would appear to be a significant gamble both for DAZN and promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, staging a fight like this potentially allows not only DAZN, but the sport of Boxing to be seen by more eyes, particularly among those for whom have little to sporadic interest in the sport that all of the above believe will translate into expanding DAZN’s existing subscriber-base. There is also an obvious hope that by putting two world championship level fights to round out what appears to be a solidly matched undercard that the increased exposure for the sport will also translate into long-term subscribers as DAZN looks to continue expanding their broadcasting rights to cover the U.S. market.

If this indeed proves to be a win for DAZN, Hearn, and all the fighters that are competing on this card, it will be good for Boxing. It is indeed indisputable however, that a market does exist for “Celebrity Boxing” Although we don’t know whether this will be a one-off for both KSI and Logan Paul, or the beginning or another part of their respective careers outside of the realm of YouTube, my main concern here is that both men not only take the sport seriously, but also treat it with the respect it deserves. Boxing much like all of combat sports after all, is a dangerous sport and one that has suffered far too many black eyes, tragedies, and needs to be treated with the utmost respect by all those who enter the ring. It is not something to take lightly.

KSI-Logan Paul II Final Press Conference Quotes

Press Release: By DAZN –  LOS ANGELES – Nov. 7, 2019 – KSI and Logan Paul exchanged verbal warfare at the final press conference ahead of their rematch this weekend at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and exclusively on DAZN. As anticipation builds for Saturday’s event, the two fighters discussed training camp and predictions for their professional debuts. The YouTube stars previously fought in an amateur boxing match in front of a sold-out crowd in Manchester, England in August 2018. Following the majority draw, KSI and Logan Paul agreed to meet again as licensed professional boxers on Nov. 9 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The event will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN, which is available on any connected device.
Credit: Amanda Westcott/DAZN

Below are some quotes from Thursday’s final press conference:

Logan Paul

“Today is the best day of my life, tomorrow is the best day of my life, and Saturday will also be the day of my life.”

“JJ works hard, has a big ego, and his ego will be his biggest asset. He will be hit in the head several times. He will suffer major repercussions. I’m surprised his trainer let him do this for a ten percent commission. This is very dangerous for him. I think people underestimate the training I’ve been doing for the last year, while he has been preparing a song.

“There are so many ways this fight could end. Could easily say KO, TKO, go the distance, it doesn’t matter. I’m prepared, my condition is top notch. We can go six rounds, but it wouldn’t be good for his health.

“This is a personal thing for me I want to go out in violent fashion and secure this this for my family and friends. KSI happens to be the guy in the ring in front of me, but this is the end of a redemption arc for me.”

KSI

“This camp is one of the toughest things I’ve done in my life. This camp has pushed me to the edge where I had blood, sweat and tears. Never worked so hard training in my life. I’ve reached a new level mentally. I’m not afraid to get hit, to get punched in the face, or take a body shot. I’m ready to f*** you up. I really am. You’re afraid to get hit, can’t go backwards, always open for body shots, hands don’t know what they’re doing, and footwork is week.”

“I know what it is like to be a pro fighter. Training two, three times a day for six days, with one day break. There was a point I didn’t think I could do this, that this is too much for me, that it was too hard. Mentally I got through it, and I realized I can do this. I’m a dog, I’m a fighter. Always made sure I defend what it’s right, what’s mine. This is my legacy, I’m defending my legacy, and you’re trying to take it away from me. I’m going to knockout him out. He won’t be able to keep up. My cardio is better than yours.”

Joe Markowski, EVP DAZN North America

“Logan, KSI – I’ve very much enjoyed getting to know you over the past couple months. You’ve taught us a lot about creating digital content and we appreciate the partnership.

“I’m continually amazed by your ability to command an audience both online and at live events.

“We’ve been banging the drum this fall: It’s Fight Season on DAZN. GGG, Canelo, Kovalev, Ruiz, Joshua. The schedule has been packed but Saturday is something different.

“This fight has been covered by ESPN to CNN to Entertainment Tonight. I have a call later today with the New York Times. I’m not saying that all the coverage will praise us – but it illustrates that we have people’s attention, which I’ve learned is not easy to do in America.

“And these men, Logan Paul and KSI, know how to generate interest. Our social media numbers for this fight are unprecedented and we welcome all of their dedicated fans to DAZN.

Eddie Hearn

“This has been an incredible build up, I have learned so much. I’ve been in the sport for ten years and I’ve never seen anything like this. The numbers for this fight are unbelievable. Countries I didn’t even know knew about boxing are tuning into this one.”

Why Kovalev-Alvarez Exceeded Expectations

There is nothing quite like the anticipation that comes before an encounter between two of Boxing’s top stars. When that anticipation is accompanied with an element of the unknown, more often than not, the Boxing fan is treated to a special night at the fights. In the case of the Light-Heavyweight world championship fight between WBO world champion Sergey Kovalev and current unified Middleweight world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, you had two top stars in the sport. One many felt was in the twilight of his career, while the other was attempting something that even in the modern era was rare.

The element of intrigue that accompanied this fight was the fact that Alvarez was moving up two weight classes to the 175lb. Light-Heavyweight division from the 160lb. Middleweight division to challenge Kovalev for his world championship. When one considers that Alvarez, who spent the bulk of his career as a 154lb. Jr. Middleweight, actually began his career in the 147lb. Welterweight division, you have the added sense of not knowing or at least not having a solid idea of what may or may not happen come fight time.

All of the elements of the “Big Fight Atmosphere” were in place on November 2nd , an enthusiastic crowd packed into the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV, site of many historic events throughout all of combat sports over the last twenty-five years, to see Kovalev and Alvarez do battle for a portion of the World Light-Heavyweight championship. In this observer’s preview of this fight, I stated that I felt it was crucial that Kovalev get the respect of Alvarez early in the fight. While I did not feel Kovalev should revert back to the seek and destroy “Knockout Artist” that he carved his reputation on, it was important for the champion to show that he was the natural Light-Heavyweight and establish the tempo of the combat.

Kovalev did exactly that by throwing a consistent jab from the outset as a main focal point of his offense and used lateral movement to avoid becoming a stationary target. Although one might have expected the roles to be reversed with Kovalev applying steady pressure on the fighter who was moving up in weight, it was Alvarez applying pressure on the champion.

Given the tactics he had implemented in recent fights since the addition of former world champion and Hall of Famer Buddy McGirt as his trainer, it was perhaps not surprising to see Kovalev take a tactical approach rather than immediately looking to knock out the shorter fighter. While the way this fight was fought was not necessarily entertaining to the casual Boxing observer, the technique that was implemented by both fighters was certainly enjoyable to watch for Boxing aficionados.

What was telling about the champion’s approach was by throwing his jab almost consistently, it created difficulty for Alvarez in getting into a rhythm as well as giving the Middleweight champion something to contend with as he came forward. Although the jab is the most basic of offensive weapons in combat sports, when it is used as effectively as it was in this fight, it can be used as an illustration as to how valuable it is to have in your arsenal if you are a fighter.

Even though Kovalev’s jab did not always land, by keeping Alvarez in a position where he had trouble being consistent with his offense, in this observer’s view. This does not mean however, that Alvarez did not have periods of effectiveness, which in several close rounds could sway opinion as to who had the upper hand. As yours truly has frequently said over the years, when it comes to close fights, it will often come down to what a judge prefers in their own individual criteria based on clean punching, effective aggressiveness, ring generalship, and defense.

In this case, it was a question of Kovalev’s consistency and Boxing ability or Alvarez’ constant pressure and seemingly harder punches that was the conundrum for those scoring the fight. From my perspective, Kovalev’s strategy was being executed well that he was able to get the benefit of doubt on my scorecard. The reason for this was not only based on the effectiveness of his jab, which as the fight progressed allowed him to mix combinations into his offense, but also the lateral movement which made Alvarez either miss his punches or create scenarios where if punches landed they appeared to be glancing blows, as the fight approached the middle and late rounds however, the effect of Alvarez’ body punches began to have a visible toll on the champion.

Despite Kovalev getting the nod in most of the early rounds by narrow margins on my scorecard, by the time the bout reached the later rounds, it had become a close fight, in my view. A fight that seemed to have the appearance of one that would be going the distance came to a sudden and brutal conclusion in round eleven.  A left hook that seemed to land behind the ear staggered Kovalev followed by a flush right hand sent the champion down along the ropes prompting the referee Russell Mora to immediately stop the fight.

It would be unethical for this observer to not mention the opinion of some that the end of this fight was somehow “A Fix.” While most of the accusations that yours truly has seen in the days following the fight came from those from outside the Boxing community, it at least should be mentioned. Having said that, as someone who will always tell the reader the truth and will always call things as I see them as I have done my entire career, the accusations are utter “Nonsense.”

For those who are curious as to why I would be so blunt, allow me to explain. Boxing aficionados who use social media platforms on a regular basis know that it has become common after almost every notable fight to see accusations of potential corruption, fixes, and robberies in the fan’s point of view. While most of these accusations come after a fight that goes to the scorecards regardless of what happens in a fight, accusations also occur after a fight that ends in a knockout.

Let me say that this is in no way is meant to “Bash” the Boxing fan, because everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, when so many accusations are thrown around on such a frequent basis, it lessens not only the validity of topics surrounding the sport that should be discussed, but it is also disrespectful to the fighters who risk their lives every time they compete. In this case, some of the claims I have seen concerned both how quickly the fight was stopped and Alvarez being knocked out along the ropes.

As yours truly pointed out shortly after the fight on his own social media pages, we saw several quick stoppages over the course of the weekend across several Boxing cards. Although some may not want to remember recent history, it is not uncommon after the sport suffers a tragedy as it has with the recent death of Patrick Day as a result of injuries suffered in a knockout loss to Charles Conwell last month, to see referees opt to stop fights quickly. Though it is understandable that from a fan’s perspective that one would want to see fights continue, as this observer has said frequently over the years, I would rather see a fight stopped too soon than potentially see a fighter suffer a permanent or even fatal injury as a result of a fight being allowed to continue longer than it should.

The stoppage of Kovalev-Alvarez was appropriate and the knockout was legitimate. Rather than focusing on a”False Controversy”, there was a more legitimate “Controversy “ that generated significant attention and criticism. A controversy surrounding DAZN’s decision to hold off on staging the Kovalev-Alvarez main event until after the conclusion of the UFC 244 main event between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz. The UFC 244 card, which took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY was broadcast in the United States on ESPN+’s pay-per-view platform.

While DAZN’s decision to delay the main event at the conclusion of a seven fight undercard to allow a competing streaming platform to conclude their main event has been seen as a sign of weakness and disrespectful to the sport of Boxing, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, although the UFC’s pay-per-view events still technically exist as a pay-per-view entity for the time being exclusively through ESPN+, those pay-per-view events are being used as a way for ESPN to sell annual subscriptions to their ESPN+ digital network and as such is not in the same realm as when those events were sold exclusively on a cable/satellite pay-per-view basis.

It is also worth noting that the Kovalev-Alvarez bout was technically a co-promotion as Kovalev has had a broadcast deal with ESPN for his recent fights. Although this is speculation on the part of this observer, it is possible that the decision to delay the Kovalev-Alvarez main event could have been a result of the competing networks, who have shown a willingness to work together, coming to an agreement. While this does not in any way speak poorly of the UFC, it should be noted that ESPN also chose to run a Boxing card on their main cable/satellite network at the same time as both the Kovalev-Alvarez card on DAZN and their own digital platform.

From my perspective, even though the main event did not begin until after 1AM ET, by not cannibalizing the audience that wanted to watch both events, it allowed an opportunity for DAZN to increase last minute subscriptions and also created a unique experience for those in attendance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, who were able to watch the Masvidal-Diaz main event on big screens in the arena. Although those watching the DAZN broadcast were not also able to see that fight as it happened, it is a sign of the changing landscape of sports where both live and on demand access is offered to the consumer in a landscape where traditional television and pay-per-view is increasingly becoming a thing of the past, that this could be an indication of how scheduling conflicts might be handled in this new era. While it is understandable how some can be frustrated by having to wait a period of time before an event they tuned in to see takes place, it is beneficial in allowing events to be viewed by as many eyes as possible without the potential of splitting the audience.

As for what happened when Kovalev and Alvarez finally got in the ring, the actual fight exceeded the expectations of some that were not expecting a competitive fight. Although Sergey Kovalev came out on the losing end of this fight, he was able to show that at thirty-six years old, with many feeling that this would be an easy fight for Alvarez given the setbacks Kovalev had suffered, he showed he can still compete effectively against a fighter regarded as one of the best pound for pound.

For Saul Alvarez, his third legitimate world championship in four weight classes now opens up possible opportunities ranging from the 160lb. Middleweight division to the 175lb. Light-Heavyweight division. While the possibility/wish of many Boxing fans and experts alike to see a third encounter between Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is still out there, possible fights against Super-Middleweight world champion Callum Smith and a unification bout against Golovin, Demetrius Andrade at Middleweight , or one of the other world champions in the Light-Heavyweight division are now all on the table as potential options for Alvarez going forward.

Taylor Defeats Linardatou To Become Two-Division World Champion

Undefeated Undisputed Women’s World Lightweight champion Katie Taylor successfully moved up in weight to dethrone WBO Jr. Welterweight world champion Christina Linardatou on Saturday night at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England. Taylor used effective lateral movement, angles, and combination punching to frustrate Linardatou over ten rounds. Although Linardatou was the aggressor from the opening bell and did connect occasionally with looping hooks to the head of Taylor, she was unable to nullify her movement to be able to have consistent success as Taylor was able to time Linardatou and pick her opportunities to attack allowing her to earn a convincing unanimous decision victory to become a two-division world champion. Official scores were 96-94, and 97-93 (on two scorecards) in favor of Taylor. Katie Taylor advances to 15-0, with 6 Knockouts. Christina Linardatou falls to 12-2, with 6 Knockouts.

Also on this card:

Former Lightweight world champion Anthony Crolla in the final fight of his career scored a workmanlike ten round majority decision over Frank Urquiaga. Despite Crolla controlling the combat for the majority of what at times resembled a sparring session, one official judge scored the fight even 95-95, while the two other official judges scored 98-92, and 97-93 in Crolla’s favor allowing the former WBA Lightweight world champion to end his career with a victory. Anthony Crolla advances to 35-7-3, with 13 Knockouts. Frank Urquiaga falls to 13-2-1, with 1 Knockout.

In a bout for the Commonwealth Middleweight championship undefeated champion Felix Cash scored a hard-fought eighth round stoppage of Jack Cullen. Cash almost ended the fight as quickly as it began dropping Cullen with a flush right hand to the head in round one. Cullen however, came to fight and fought back with grit and determination. For several rounds the two fighters engaged in several toe to toe exchanges where Cullen held his own and got the better of some of those duels. Cash dropped Cullen with a left hook to the body in round seven, but as he had done before, Cullen attempted to come back strong, but in round eight a left hook to the head by Cash set off a barrage of punches that a “Game “ and fatigued Cullen could not fend off forcing a referee’s stoppage. Official time of the stoppage was 1:14 of round eight. Felix Cash advances to 12-0, with 8 Knockouts. Jack Cullen falls to 17-2, with 8 Knockouts.

In a battle for the Women’s IBO Jr. Lightweight world championship undefeated champion Terri Harper scored a ten round unanimous decision over Viviane Obenauf. Harper, who coincidentally turned twenty-three years old tonight, dominated the action from the opening bell dictating the combat with her jab and landing several flush hooks to the head and body throughout the fight. Despite being tactically out gunned and appearing at times to be on the verge of being stopped, Obenauf was very “Game” and never stopped trying to make it a fight against the champion. Official scores were:99-91, 98-92, and 97-93 all in favor of Harper. Terri Harper advances to 9-0, with 5 Knockouts. Viviane Obenauf falls to 14-6, with 7 Knockouts.

Rising Heavyweight prospect Martin Bakolie scored an impressive second round stoppage of Rodney Hernandez. A left hook to the body of Hernandez sent him in retreat with his hands down. Bakolie eventually dropped his opponent with a left hook and the bout was waved off. Official time of the stoppage was 2:50 of round two. Martin Bakolie advances to 15-1, with 12 Knockouts.Rodney Hernandez falls to 13-9-2, with 4 Knockouts. It was Bakolie’s second consecutive knockout win in two weeks after stopping former world title challenger Kevin Johnson on October 19th.

Undefeated Jr. Featherweight Qais Ashfaq remained unbeaten with a seven round technical decision over Joe Ham after the fight was stopped due to an accidental clash of heads. Qais Ashfaq advances to 8-0, with 3 Knockouts. Joe Ham falls to 16-2, with 6 Knockouts.

Featherweight Gamal Yafai scored a third round stoppage of Lee Clayton. Gamal Yafai advances to 17-1, with 10 Knockouts. Lee Clayton falls to 10-4, with 2 Knockouts.

Undefeated Jr.Welterweight Nathan Ferrell remained unbeaten with a four round decision over Ivica Gogosevic. Nathan Ferrell advances to 3-0, with 0 Knockouts. Ivica Gogosevic falls to 12-29-2, with 5 Knockouts.

Also in the Jr. Welterweight division, undefeated Dalton Smith improved to 4-0 in his career with a third round stoppage of Michael Carrero. Dalton Smith advances to 4-0, with 3 Knockouts. Michael Carrero falls to 13-55-6, with 6 Knockouts.

Jr. Featherweight Ivan Price successfully made his professional debut by scoring a four round decision over Joel Sanchez. Ivan Price advances to 1-0, with 1 Knockout. Joel Sanchez falls to 4-10-1, with 2 Knockouts.

While this card was billed as a double main event featuring Katie Taylor and Anthony Crolla, the thing this observer takes away from it beyond the conclusion of a fine career for Anthony Crolla is the card also represented another in a series of crucial steps forward for Women’s Boxing as it was the first card in my memory where two world championship fights in Women’s Boxing took place on the same card and also the first to be seen on television in the United States and globally thanks to digital subscription sports streaming network DAZN. What it might represent for women in the sport going forward beyond increased and valuable television exposure is the potential for the purses for female fighters to increase to far more lucrative levels than at any time in Women’s Boxing history. A crucial step in the right direction for all women who compete in the sport.
