“Jake vs. Joshua fight week builds up to the biggest event in boxing this year, with fight week events hosted at the iconic LIV at Fontainebleau Miami Beach and Fillmore Miami Beach, all free and open to the public,” said Nakisa Bidarian, CEO and co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions. “The week will begin with the return of our signature series of sanctioned, professional fights within our open workouts event, MVP Fight Week Showcase 2, spotlighting three MVP fighters: our newest signings Luan Almeida and US prospect Jocelyn Camarillo, joined by former world champion Shannon Courtenay. We also look forward to formally introducing the global Netflix audience to US Olympian Jahmal Harvey, who will open the main card of Jake vs. Joshua, and who we believe is the most promising male boxing prospect to come out of Team USA this decade.”

“MVP keeps raising the bar. Two GOATs in Anderson Silva vs. Tyron Woodley, Alycia Baumgardner ready for a takeover and doing so with men’s rules, and now Jahmal Harvey joining the main card to show the world why he’s America’s next superstar,” said Jake Paul. “Jake vs. Joshua Fight Week is stacked, it’s free for fans, and it’s all building to me shocking the world on Friday, December 19 at Kaseya Center, live only on Netflix.”

US Olympian and amateur world champion Jahmal Harvey (1-0, 1 KO) was introduced to boxing at age 13 by his football coach Darrell Davis, who also owned a boxing gym. After competing in both sports, Harvey, an Oxon Hill, Maryland native, soon went all-in on boxing and immediately proved his elite potential at the junior, youth, and amateur levels, becoming a 10x national champion. By 18, he was training and sparring with Olympians, including Keyshawn Davis and Duke Ragan. That same year, he captured gold at the 2021 Elite World Championships— becoming the first American male to win the world title since 2007, while competing as one of the youngest athletes in the tournament. The next year, he took home silver at the 2022 Continental Championships and continued to dominate at the international level in 2023, winning gold at the Santiago Pan American Games. The finish qualified him for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he finished as a quarter-finalist. The 22-year-old Harvey signed with Most Valuable Promotions ahead of his professional debut–a knockout win–on MVP’s Most Valuable Prospects 14 in August 2025, heralded as one of the top prospects in American boxing.

Kevin Cervantes (5-0, 5 KOs) comes to the ring from Los Angeles by way of Barranquilla, Colombia. The 25-year-old prospect holds a perfect undefeated record so far in his pro career, and comes to the ring fresh from his latest first-round TKO win in September 2025. He began boxing at just 11 years old after his parents introduced him to the sport to channel his energy and fighting spirit productively. With an impressive 87-fight amateur background, Cervantes has developed into a relentless brawler known for his aggressive, high-pressure style reminiscent of his idol, Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán. Defined by his hard work, discipline, and commitment, Cervantes continues to build his name in the professional ranks as one of the sport’s most determined young fighters. He is managed by Rob Suarez and trained by Oscar Negrete.

MVP’s new signee Luan Medeiros (6-0, 4 KOs) is an undefeated professional lightweight boxer and the current CNB Super Lightweight Brazilian National Champion. As an amateur, he built an extensive career with close to 150 fights, boasting over 114 wins and becoming a Brazilian National Champion, Copa del Pacífico winner in Ecuador, and a Cheo Aponte Tournament runner-up in Puerto Rico. Domestically, he won multiple regional titles, including 4x Rio de Janeiro state champion, 3x São Paulo state champion, Paraná state champion, Sul-Sudeste champion, and Centro-Oeste champion. He also represented Brazil internationally, winning team challenges against Italy and Argentina. Outside the ring, the 30-year-old Luan is known for his relationship with Brazilian A-list actress Mel Maia, who has over 21 million followers. His opponent, Hugo Macias (7-1-1, 5 KOs), is a 32-year-old prospect from Tijuana, Mexico. Macias most recently earned a 4th round TKO win in September 2025, and now makes his international boxing debut in his first pro bout outside of Mexico against Medeiros.

Former WBA bantamweight world champion at 118lbs and Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire native, Shannon Courtenay (9‑3, 3 KOs) transformed her life and career after discovering boxing in her early twenties, trading in a party lifestyle for intense discipline at Finchley ABC in London. Rising through the professional ranks beginning in March 2019, she claimed the vacant WBA female bantamweight title in April 2021, delivering a fiercely technical and emotional unanimous decision over Australia’s Ebanie Bridges in what many hailed as one of women's boxing’s best fights. Courtenay’s jab proved decisive, and she overcame early cut damage and increasing pressure to outmaneuver Bridges and increasingly exploit a swelling eye that nearly shut by round eight. Unfortunately, Courtenay was stripped of her title ahead of her first defense in October 2021 when she came in 2.5 lb over the limit, an issue she attributed to an unexpected menstrual cycle—a rare moment of honesty that highlighted health over title retention. She subsequently faced Jamie Mitchell at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, losing a hard-fought majority decision in October  2021 despite staying in the ring through adversity. Courtenay returned to the ring in October 2024, edged out with a competitive points decision defeat to Catherine Tacone Ramos in a six-round bout at London’s Copper Box Arena. She most recently defeated Bec Connolly in March 2025. Her opponent, Jessica Radtke Maltez (2-2-2) comes to the ring from Waconia, Minnesota. Maltez most recently earned a unanimous decision win in September 2025.

MVP’s new signee Jocelyn Camarillo (5-0) is a 3x amateur national champion, former #1-ranked US amateur in the light flyweight division, and a proud training partner for Team USA Youth & Elite. She proudly represents Indio, California as one of the brightest young talents coming out of the Coachella Valley boxing community. Jocelyn grew up watching boxing and developed a natural passion that eventually led her to train at the historic Coachella Valley Boxing Club, where she built a strong amateur foundation and sharpened her skills among some of the region’s best athletes. Known for her speed, accuracy, and high-IQ pressure style, Jocelyn has quickly developed a reputation as a disciplined athlete with true star potential. Both inside and outside the ring, she brings charisma, professionalism, and a growing fanbase that continues to follow her journey. As she enters the next chapter of her career with MVP, standing 5-0 on her pro career, Jocelyn is focused, hungry, and ready to take on bigger challenges. She will face Yazmin Martinez Jimenez (3-2-2, 1 KO) over 4 rounds at light flyweight. Jimenez, the 24-year-old prospect, fights out of Mexico City, Mexico and most recently earned a TKO win in March 2025 and a split draw in October 2025 against highly touted and undefeated prospect, Perla Bazaldua.

JAKE PAUL QUOTES

On why he’s fighting Anthony Joshua: I like to challenge myself. I like to take on the biggest, the best. I said anyone, anytime, any place - I truly mean that. No one ever thought that this would be possible, that we would be here when I first started boxing, and no one thinks I'm going to win. So join the list and be ready to be shocked.

On dealing with critics and the idea he’s in a lose-lose situation: I've never been knocked down or knocked out, even in sparring, but I'm in a sport where that happens. This is not a one-sided fight as people think. And I have power, I have the ability to put people to sleep. That's why I took this challenge - and I know it's crazy and all of that, but I'm excited. I'm genuinely excited. My team's excited and everyone believes in me, and that's all that matters.

On what makes him confident he can beat Joshua: He's one of the best heavyweights ever, but I believe that fighting a smaller man is oftentimes harder as a heavyweight because of the speed difference and because of the foot speed, because of the angles, because of the head being off of the center. And so all of that power is great, and he's knocked people out. I just have to avoid that one shot for eight rounds, and I believe that I can do that. So when I'm bouncing around the ring, jabbing, weaving, and doing all of these things, I know I can pick him apart and score points and make this a very, very big contest. People say, “Oh, I respect Jake Paul for getting in there.” No, respect me because I'm about to win.

On who has more pressure going into the fight: Anthony. Yeah, 1000%. This is something that's going to weigh on him, right? Because of what you said. I'm going in there, I can fight free. If he starts getting touched up and losing rounds, I think the cookie will crumble.

On the significance of fighting Joshua in just his 14th pro fight: We've been pushing boundaries, and that's what I'm really here is to be a beacon for kids out there to take inspiration from. That's one of the biggest things and goals I have in my life, is to show people what the power of self-belief, manifestation, hard work, discipline, and where it can take you, and to take risks…..I'm here to inspire kids and do things differently, and be a disruptor.

On his official prediction for the fight: Official prediction: I think a fourth or fifth round knockout by me. Damn. There it is.

ANTHONY JOSHUA QUOTES

On how the Jake Paul fight came together and his reaction to it: It's great. I think it's massive. It's colossal. It's making big news. We're bringing marketability together with ability. Those two worlds collide. You've got Jake Paul versus Anthony Joshua, and we're here in Miami. We're bringing Europe, Africa, Asia, and Nigeria, the whole world together to watch this show on Netflix; it's going to be phenomenal. And that's how we ended up here. Basically, two guys that just want to put on a good show.

On critics saying this fight could stain his legacy: I just focus on people that believe in me, that are supporting me, and that's it, if I'm honest. So I ain't got nothing to say to those people because they don't even come into my psyche.

On what he sees when he looks at Jake Paul: Talent focus, good team - nothing negative. He's here to do his job. I could sit up here and try and address all the things that Jake doesn't do good, but I'm fighting the Jake that's going to do everything good on December 19th. So let me focus on that. He's a good person, does his thing, great team around him, puts in the work, and that's why he's sitting here now. Anyone out there in the world that works harder than the next person deserves to be a frontrunner, and he's a frontrunner in the boxing game right now.

On changing trainers for this fight: I won't be trained by Ben Davidson. I said that London's a bit distracting for me, so I was invited to train with Team Usyk. We've been doing some good training out in Spain, and I think he's [Oleksander Usyk] one of the best in the world. And it's not all down to him; it's also down to his team that surrounds him. So I linked up with them and [I’m] getting insight into how someone who's achieved so much. It's been phenomenal, man. It's been a great experience, and it's very challenging.

On how seriously he’s taking Jake Paul: He's been professional now, what, four years? Five, I do believe, right? Five years. So after three years, I was the underdog and no one believed in me - I came up fighting the best in the world. You can't underestimate anyone.

On what he’ll bring to the fight: I'm going to bring him to another school of boxing that I don't think he's been exposed to yet. So there's a few tricks I have up my sleeve to show Jake on December 19th.

The American pride of Puerto Rico, Jake “El Gallo de Dorado” Paul has shown tremendous growth as a boxer on his path to becoming a world champion, and now will look to prove he has what it takes against one of the most feared punchers in boxing and greatest pound-for-pound heavyweights in the world, Anthony Joshua.

"This isn’t an AI simulation. This is Judgment Day,” said Jake Paul. “A professional heavyweight fight against an elite world champion in his prime. When I beat Anthony Joshua, every doubt disappears, and no one can deny me the opportunity to fight for a world title. To all my haters, this is what you wanted. To the people of the United Kingdom, I am sorry. On Friday, December 19, under the lights in Miami, live globally only on Netflix, the torch gets passed and Britain’s Goliath gets put to sleep. I KNOWWWW YOU GOT EM PICKED HAHAHHA"

Ahead of his showdown with Jake Paul, Anthony “AJ” Joshua enters the ring as one of the most accomplished heavyweights of his era. The 2012 Olympic gold medalist and two-time unified world champion has headlined stadiums across the globe, battled legends like Wladimir Klitschko and Oleksandr Usyk, and most recently delivered a devastating knockout of Francis Ngannou before facing IBF titleholder Daniel Dubois in front of 96,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.

“Jake or anyone can get this work. No mercy,” said Anthony Joshua OBE. “I took some time out and I’m coming back with a mega show. It’s a big opportunity for me. Whether you like it or not, I’m here to do massive numbers, have big fights and break every record whilst keeping cool, calm and collected. Mark my words, you’ll see a lot more fighters take these opportunities in the future. I’m about to break the internet over Jake Paul’s face.”

“Everyone laughed when Jake Paul said in March that he wanted to fight AJ in 2026,” said Nakisa Bidarian, CEO of Most Valuable Promotions. “Well, plans changed, and in under two weeks, MVP and Netflix have made one of the biggest fights of all time. Now, as only Jake Paul could and would do, he’s fighting one of the most fearsome boxers in the world. Joshua has every advantage in this fight, except one - the delusional confidence of Jake Paul, and if anyone can shock the world, it’s him. This is a global clash between two of the most recognizable figures in the sport, Jake, the face of boxing’s new era, and Joshua, the King of UK boxing."

“Anthony Joshua is one of the most formidable and decorated heavyweights in the world – the ultimate test for any fighter,” said Gabe Spitzer, Vice President, Sports, Netflix. “We have immense respect for Jake Paul's decision to take this challenge; it demonstrates the fearless ambition he has for his career. This is exactly why Netflix is in the live business: we love taking big swings and delivering the biggest, must-watch cultural spectacles.”

"They say be careful what you wish for, kind of feel like that’s all I need to say,” said Eddie Hearn, Chairman Matchroom. “Two of the biggest names in the sport will collide on Dec 19. Whilst I admire Jake’s balls, he’s going to find out the hard way in Miami.”

Additional information, including undercard bouts and co-main event details, will be announced in the coming weeks.”

About Anthony Joshua

Anthony “AJ” Joshua claimed Olympic gold for Team Great Britain at London 2012 before becoming one of the biggest heavyweight stars in the world. In April 2016, he destroyed then-IBF titleholder Charles Martin to win his first world title, successfully defending it twice before defeating legend Wladimir Klitschko in an unforgettable battle in front of 90,000 at England’s national stadium in April 2017 to unify the division and earn the WBA title. He unified the division again in March 2018 by defeating Joseph Parker to become the WBO, IBF and WBA world champion, successfully defending the belts against Alexander Povetkin at Wembley Stadium in September 2018. In his American debut at Madison Square Garden, he lost his unbeaten record to Andy Ruiz Jr, but avenged the loss in Saudi Arabia in December 2019 to become a two-time unified WBO, IBF, and WBA heavyweight champion. The now-36-year-old followed that up with a KO victory over mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev at Wembley Arena a year later before testing himself on two occasions against pound-for-pound powerhouse Oleksandr Usyk. Still hungry, Joshua moved to Dallas, Texas to work under new trainer Derrick James before returning to the UK to fight Jermaine Franklin at the O2 in April 2023, earning his 25th career victory with a wide points decision in his first fight back at the dome since 2016. AJ then fought Robert Helenius on short notice, earning a devastating knockout of the year contender in the seventh round, then landed a headline slot in Saudi Arabia in December 2023 against Otto Wallin, who retired on his stool at the end of the fifth round. In March 2024, Joshua delivered a devastating second-round Knockout of the Year against MMA star Francis Ngannou. In pursuit of becoming a three-time heavyweight world champion, Joshua most recently took on then-IBF title holder, fellow Brit and former sparring partner Daniel Dubois in front of 96,000 fans at Wembley Stadium in September 2024.

Alvarez-Crawford: A Long Overdue Win For Boxing

All too often, the phrase “The Biggest Fight of the Year" is an overused cliche. It is a good sales hook and a way to draw interest in a Boxing match, but also in other combat disciplines as well including the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). As effective as the phrase is as a promotional tool, whether the fight in question deserves such a label attached to it or not, if the fight doesn't deliver when all the promotion, hype, press obligations, and weigh-ins have run their course, once two fighters get into the ring, it can and often does leave a feeling of dissatisfaction and a bad taste in the mouths of Boxing fans, even when such an occasion has been made consumer-friendly by removing the expensive price tag that often accompanies such events.

There are times, however, when the aforementioned hype tactics, promotion, and general anticipation results in a great fight that serves as a way to elevate Boxing as a whole. The once fantasy matchup, turned legitimate “SuperFight" between Undisputed Super-Middleweight world champion Saul “Canelo" Alvarez and undefeated former four-division world champion Terence Crawford proved to be such an occasion. A fight that was simply about two future Hall of Famers, who are legitimately among the best fighters in the world competing against each other and not one that was surrounded by personal animosity or “Bad Blood," whether legitimate or manufactured as a promotional tool to draw interest in the encounter.

This was simply about two of the best fighters of their era showing why they are held in such regard. As often happens prior to great fights, there was also the element of the unknown. Crawford, who had held world titles ranging from the 135lb. Lightweight division to the 154lb. Jr. Middleweight division, becoming an undisputed world champion in both the Jr. Welterweight and Welterweight divisions, was moving up fourteen pounds, bypassing the 160lb. Middleweight division,to challenge the long-reigning Super-Middleweight king at 168lbs. Despite the illogical scenario, Crawford had proven long before this challenge to be a generational fighter and the significant jump in weight did not intimidate him, nor did facing a fighter in Alvarez, who like himself had proven to be a generational fighter.

What also added intrigue to this was the perception that, despite his long reign atop the Super-Middleweight division, to some, Alvarez had shown signs of decline in recent fights. Not surprisingly given each fighter’s skillset, what took place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV on September 13th was a tactical Boxing chess match at the highest possible level.

A tactical battle between two tacticians where there was not much to separate the two in the early rounds. Crawford generally being the fighter getting his punches off first, Alvarez looking to apply consistent pressure and focusing his offense on Crawford's body. With both fighters having periods of success in several rounds, it was difficult to discern who had an edge.

Over time, however, there began to be subtle separation, despite applying consistent pressure from the outside, at no sustainable point, was Alvarez able to successfully trap Crawford and nullify his movement. This in addition to being consistently beaten to the punch and outworked gave Crawford an edge in what remained a competitive fight round by round for the full duration of the twelve round world championship bout. It was also noticeable that whenever Alvarez landed solidly either to the body or head, Crawford would immediately return offense to such degree that it would effectively steal those moments from the champion and likely change what were close rounds that might have been swaying in Alvarez’ direction, the opposite way.

At the conclusion of nine rounds, I had Crawford up five rounds to four. Despite the perceptions of some going in that Alvarez may have been on the decline, it was not so much an issue of decline in a fighter as Alvarez performed well throughout the fight and remained competitive, as it was him coming up against a fighter in Terence Crawford that much like Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol, the only two fighters to had scored victories over him prior to this fight, is a master boxer with no visible flaws that opponents have been able to take advantage of. The same would be true for Alvarez as he, though competitive and having his moments throughout the fight, was simply unable to solve the puzzle Terence Crawford presented, in losing a close, but unanimous decision.

The official scorecards of 116-112 (Eight rounds to four), and 115-113 (Seven rounds to five) on the remaining two cards was not surprising. Round by round it proved to be competitive and a healthy debate is likely to occur when you consider individual rounds as to who had the upper hand amongst fans and experts.

At the end of the twelve round world championship bout I arrived with an eight rounds to four scorecard or 116-112 in points in favor of Crawford. From this observer’s perspective, Crawford not only dictated how the fight was fought, but he was able to sustain that pace throughout. Even as successful as Alvarez was in spots periodically throughout the fight, whatever he was able to do, Crawford had an immediate answer for and this in addition to his being able to outwork Alvarez is what I based my score on.

The victory for Terence Crawford was not only a vindication for him in the sense of seemingly being denied opportunities to face the fellow stars of his era either for business reasons or for other aspects having to do with the politics of Boxing, but it was also a historic one making him the first fighter in Boxing history to become an undisputed world champion in three separate weight divisions.

From a business perspective, the Alvarez-Crawford bout proved to be a massive success drawing over 70,000 spectators to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas as well as over forty-one million viewers on digital subscription streaming entertainment network Netflix, which should provide further evidence that Boxing has a bright future away from the outdated model of pay-per-view and those types of numbers should convince the holdouts that remain that the time has come to change course and embrace subscription-based streaming with open arms. Alvarez-Crawford truly delivered on being the biggest fight of 2025 and for a sport that will unfortunately always have its flaws and criticisms, it was a long overdue win for the sport. How the sport reacts to that win and how those in it both who were involved in the promotion of this fight and outside of it look to build off of it, remains to be seen.

Alvarez-Crawford The Biggest Fight of 2025

On September 13th the Boxing world will converge on Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas,NV for the biggest event in the sport of Boxing in 2025 as two-time Undisputed Super-Middleweight world champion Saul “Canelo" Alvarez will make the first defense of his crown since regaining undisputed champion status in May of this year against undefeated multi-division world champion Terence Crawford. An encounter eagerly anticipated and in some ways mythical in the sense of it being a mythical fantasy fight in the minds of fans and experts alike not long ago.

The reason for that is largely rooted in the fact that Crawford, a former four-division world champion, who became undisputed world champion in both the Jr. Welterweight and Welterweight divisions, has only competed as high as the 154lb. Jr. Middleweight division. While he most recently won the WBO Jr. Middleweight world championship in August of last year with a twelve round decision over previously unbeaten Israel Madrimov, Crawford is at a unique stage in his career that few fighters can claim.

For Crawford is a true rarity in that he has spent his entire career virtually cleaning out every division he has competed in with little resistance from his opposition. This has put him in rarified air as a fighter that feels there is not much more he could accomplish and rightly has earned the right to pick a marquee fight in what could be his final bout of a Hall of Fame career. The choice is arguably the most challenging option, moving up in weight one more time to challenge Alvarez for his undisputed crown.

What makes this unique and potentially a historic occasion is Crawford, who has only fought as high as the 154lb. Jr. Middleweight division only once,  will be moving up fourteen pounds  and two divisions to make the attempt to become the first fighter to become an undisputed world champion in three separate weight classes. When one considers that Cranford began his career as an 135lb. Lightweight, it puts such an attempt in perspective as he will now be competing in a fight thirty-three pounds up the scale from where he began his career. While some may not appreciate that figure, there have only been a few fighters throughout history that have been able to defy conventional wisdom by going up significantly in weight over time and do so successfully.

The most prominent example in terms of modern times outside of Crawford is the recently returned and also recent inductee into the International Boxing Hall of Fame Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao, a man who began his career as a 105lb. Strawweight, moved up through multiple divisions becoming Boxing's only eight-division world champion, coincidentally like Crawford, winning a world championship as high as the 154lb. Jr. Middleweight division. While the styles of Crawford and Pacquiao are different, the similarity between the two is both were and are generational talents that have elevated Boxing.

As for the man who will be standing in Crawford's way on September 13th, Saul “Canelo" Alvarez has also cemented his legacy as a future Hall of Famer having won world titles in four weight classes and becoming the first fighter in history to fully unify the 168lb. Super-Middleweight division, a distinction that due to the politics that be in the sport, he has accomplished twice.

Despite his accomplishments and being arguably still at the top of his game, some have suggested that Alvarez has shown some signs of decline in recent fights. The basis for this is likely rooted in the fact that Alvarez has not stopped an opponent inside the distance since November 2021 when he knocked out then IBF Super-Middleweight world champion Caleb Plant in the first fight where he became Undisputed Super-Middleweight world champion. Outside of a defeat in a failed bid to regain a portion of the World Light-Heavyweight championship to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022, Alvarez has remained atop the Super-Middleweight division. In his last fight, Alvarez regained his undisputed status by scoring a twelve round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten IBF world champion William Scull. Although a lopsided victory over an opponent with an amateur style that did not press Alvarez, criticism has remained.

Whether or not the fact that Alvarez, who has gone seven bouts since his last stoppage victory, is a sign of decline is for now a matter of debate. The fact that outside of his loss to a master boxer in Bivol, Alvarez has been able to retain his position atop the Super-Middleweight division by scoring convincing victories that though not ending in knockouts, have been no less convincing is something to also take into consideration. While one would have to go back to his first two fights against Gennady Golovkin in the 160lb. Middleweight division to find fights outside of his most recent loss to Bivol, to find a significant debate over the outcome, (This observer is on record in his stance that Golovkin won both of those bouts that ended in a draw in the first fight and a win for Alvarez in the second encounter) Alvarez’ two losses have all come to fighters regarded as master boxers, Floyd Mayweather and the aforementioned Bivol.

Although one would have a valid argument to suggest that Terence Crawford, like Mayweather and Bivol is a master boxer with seemingly no flaws having been exposed to this point in his career, the question here should be whether the aspect of weight will be the dominant factor rather than overall skillset and execution that will determine who will win this fight. Despite moving up in weight to challenge Alvarez, Crawford does have two physical advantages going into this encounter. A one inch height advantage at 5’8 and nearly four inches in reach with a 74 inch reach compared to Alvarez’ 70 ½ reach. Where things at least in theory, however, begin to tip more in the champion’s favor is Alvarez began his career as a 147lb. Welterweight, twelve pounds higher than where Crawford began his as a Lightweight. Furthermore, Alvarez has routinely fought and dominated naturally bigger opposition, particularly since he moved into the Super-Middleweight division and also briefly held a World Light-Heaweight championship as well along the way, so those physical advantages Crawford has, though legitimate, likely does not concern the champion.

How does this fight play itself out? This is a case where it's a true unknown in the sense that both Alvarez and Crawford are both well-rounded boxer/punchers that can do a little of everything, but the perception many fans seem to have is that Cranford has more going for him than Alvarez going into this encounter. This perception could likely be due to the idea that Alvarez has had trouble against fighters considered to be master boxers and at least on paper, this looks to be a similar scenario as Alvarez faced against Mayweather and Bivol. Whether that manifests itself in the ring remains to be seen.  Neither fighter has ever been dropped in their careers so it will be interesting to see what happens if there is a heated exchange of punches and it will be of equal interest to see who will have the edge in hand speed.  One aspect that has not been talked much about, however, is unlike his bouts against Mayweather where he had a disadvantage in terms of major fight experience, and Bivol a master boxer who was also naturally bigger, now this is a little of a reversal in that Alvarez has more than enough experience in fights like this and now is the fighter more experienced competing at heavier weights. The question will be how his skillset and fight plan will match up against Crawford at this stage in his career.

An aspect of this event that also adds to it being the biggest fight of the year is most fights that fit that description are usually reserved for the excuse of the pay-per-view model, something that frankly has been detrimental and to be blunt a cancer to the sport as costs have only gone up over time, frequency of pay-per-view being used also having increased, and digital streaming networks like DAZN, once marketed as a viable alternative to the model with the introduction of a subscription-based model, having found themselves dipping their toes more and more into pay-per-view, that has alienated many subscribers, but this event, which is legitimately the biggest fight on the Boxing calendar will not be on pay-per-view either through independent means or through a network like DAZN. Instead, this fight has the potential to achieve the type of viewership promoters could only dream of via the outdated pay-per-view model, by airing on global digital entertainment streaming network Netflix, with no additional fee attached beyond a Netflix subscription to access the event either live or on demand.

Following the success of the Tyson-Paul event last November and the all women's Boxing card headlined by the third encounter between future Hall of Famers Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano earlier this year in Madison Square Garden, this event will mark Netflix's third Boxing event and like the previous two, has the potential to draw numbers never reached before for Boxing in the streaming era. While Netflix has invested in single events in the sport to this point that they feel are significant rather than seeking output deals with promoters to provide a consistent schedule, the fact that this fight will show once again the viability of subscription-based models over the inflated, overused, and our dated model of pay-per-view, should be viewed as a positive for the sport. Not only because of it being consumer-friendly, but also, it will put other networks involved in the sport as well as promoters who have continued to insist on pay-per-view, despite increasing evidence that it is no longer embraced by consumers, in the position of needing to both step up their game, but also do so with a model that will be consumer-friendly and will thus allow them to remain competitive in the sport. With the recent news that the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Mixed Martial Arts promotion, a promotion that has long had its own subscription-based streaming network UFC Fight Pass, which has allowed subscribers access to the promotion's full library as well as content both live and on demand from other promoters throughout combat sports, but one that has remained on pay-per-view for its numbered events as being the only real stronghold outside of Boxing keeping the model alive, recently signed a $7.7 Billion deal with digital entertainment streaming network Paramount+ to carry all upcoming UFC events including numbered events, which will all be included with a subscription to Paramount+ beginning in 2026 with no additional pay-per-view fees attached, thus moving the promotion fully away from the pay-per-view model, which was in response to its own declining pay-per-view numbers, while also maintaining its own streaming network, hopefully, this along with Netflix's involvement in Boxing, will finally break the wall of resistance of those promoters and network that have continued to insist on pay-per-view that Boxing is officially out of excuses and the time has finally come for change. If Alvarez-Crawford turns in solid numbers in terms of viewership as expected and draws additional subscribers, with Netflix looking to continue their involvement in the sport, even better.

If the fight turns out to be the true 50/50 encounter it appears to be on paper, ultimately this will likely be remembered akin to some of the classic encounters of the 1980’s where fights like this were regarded as true special occasions in the sport and the fights themselves are regarded and remembered fondly as all-time classics, which elevated Boxing to higher levels and drew interest from not only casual fans, but also folks who had never seen the sport before, which thus created new fans and helped grow the sport. As one who does not make predictions, this is a rare instance where I can not offer even a suggestion as to where things are leaning. For the first time in a good while, the aspect of the unknown that surrounds this fight has me excited to cover it and I cannot wait for round 1 to begin.

Jabs And Observations July-August 2025

The time has come once again for this observer to pull out the periodic feature here on The Boxing Truth®️ Jabs And Observations. A feature column that was originally thought up as a bi-monthly addition as an attempt by yours truly to cover even more ground than what is typically found during a standard calendar year in covering the sport of Boxing. In more recent times, however, the concept of what I refer to as J&O in referencing upcoming features on social media has been used when pauses in the usual schedule have been unwanted, but necessary.

While the month of July necessitated such a pause that was not intended by yours truly, it certainly did not mean that the sport was inactive. In fact, it was quite the opposite. When one will look back at the month that was July 2025 down the line, it will likely be summed up in two words: “Marquee Events." A description that due largely to the fourth of July holiday, the fact that it is in the middle of the summer here in the United States and for many, that means vacations and traveling, as well as other sporting events typically scheduled for this time of year, one usually does not think of the month of July as a target for Boxing’s major events. This time around, however, there were four significant events throughout the month that for their own reasons, fit the description.

Of course, arguably the biggest among those events took place on July 11th inside Madison Square Garden in New York City as future Hall of Famers and world champions Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano met for the third time with Taylor's Undisputed Jr. Welterweight world championship on the line. Back at the location of their legendary first encounter in April 2022 where they became the first women's Boxing match to main event in the main arena of Madison Square Garden, the third encounter was even more significant as it would not only serve as a main event once more, but this time, would top the first ever all-women’s Boxing card in the history of Madison Square Garden.

Seen by over six million live viewers on Netflix as the general entertainment subscription-based streaming network’s second foray into Boxing after serving as the broadcaster of the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson event last November, in which the second encounter between Taylor and Serrano stole the show, the third battle between the two best female fighters of their era, like the previous two, was a closely fought and competitive fight from start to finish. Unlike the first two bouts, however, which were all-action grueling wars that some feel Taylor just barely did enough to win those fights, fight three was more of a tactical battle where each woman had periods of success in showcasing her skillset.

A fight fought at a more measured pace favored Taylor more than the grueling back and forth wars of the first two fights in that she was able to use her movement and angles to set up her offense, consistently get her punches off first, and not get into the heated exchanges that highlighted the previous bouts between the two. While perhaps disappointing to some, when two fighters face each other multiple times, not every fight is going to be exactly like the one or ones that preceded it. This is due primarily to the fighters being able to familiarize themselves with each other's styles and tendencies and make adjustments to their respective approach. In this case, though she also got the upper hand in the first two fights, Taylor was able to keep the pace slightly slower in the third bout and not get into a toe to toe battle with Serrano.

Although Serrano had periods of success throughout the third fight, this time the measured pace that was established by Taylor allowed the Undisputed Jr. Welterweight world champion to outwork her over ten rounds to earn a decision victory to retain her crown. Similar to the previous two fights, however, a split decision in the first and a unanimous one point decision in the second, fight three saw Taylor earn the nod of two official judges, while the third judge scored the fight even giving her a majority decision.

While this observer will likely revisit the Taylor-Serrano trilogy again in long-form down the line as the historic series and its significance deserves its own column, what will likely be the final encounter between the two legends before each takes their rightful place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame and a well-earned retirement, Taylor-Serrano 3 is not the only topic that will be discussed in this edition of Jabs and Observations.

The very next evening on July 12th, the first of three pay-per-view events during the month of July, a doubleheader took place at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, NY broadcast by DAZN as part of an event titled simply as Ring III, which in short was the third card promoted under the Ring Magazine banner. The highlight of this card was two separate bouts in the Lightweight and Super-Middleweight divisions. In the first encounter, undefeated three-division world champion Shakur Stevenson defended his WBC World Lightweight championship against number one WBC contender William Zepeda. Despite being one of the top stars in the sport, Stevenson had somewhat unfairly gained a reputation in recent years for being a dominant, yet not necessarily the most crowd pleasing world champion. This is due largely to Stevenson's superior Boxing ability in being able to out box his opposition, often earning decision victories rather than highlight reel knockouts or putting himself at unnecessary risk.

It was because of this reputation that not much was expected by many fans and experts, including yours truly. Although William Zepeda had earned his number one ranking legitimately and deserved the opportunity, having covered several of Stevenson's fights, I felt stylistically, unless Zepeda were to catch the champion with something significant early, this would be another performance highlighted by Stevenson's combination punching, hand speed, and ability to be elusive in a likely wide victory on the scorecards.

While the champion's skillset ultimately would be the story of this fight, it would not necessarily be for the aforementioned attributes, or at least not in the form they had been showcased up to the point of this bout. In a strategy that was perhaps a response to pressure both from fans and the promoters of this event, Stevenson chose to be more engaging in the sense of being willing to stand in the line of fire, rather than using his legs to evade offense from his opponent.

From a pure entertainment standpoint, the change in approach seemed to make things more interesting for those who do not necessarily consider themselves to be Boxing purest. Despite staying in the pocket and putting himself at risk, Stevenson's ability to use upper body movement, timing, and counter punching as well as his hand speed carried the action as he outworked Zepeda to retain his world championship via a wide and convincing twelve round unanimous decision.

While more entertaining in the sense that he did not use his legs to evade offense as much as compared to previous fights, Shakur Stevenson showed why he is among the elite fighters in the world with this latest performance and did so against a dangerous opponent. As for what's next for Stevenson, it would not surprise yours truly to see him try to pursue a unification bout before the end of this year or early 2026.

The second half of this doubleheader in Queens saw former world title challenger and top Super-Middleweight contender Edgar Berlanga facing undefeated top contender Hamzah Sheeraz in a WBA world title elimination bout. After three rounds of tactical positioning where neither fighter really stood out clearly from the other while each was looking for an opening, a combination to the head highlighted by a left hook by Sheeraz sent Berlanga down hard on the canvas late in the fourth round. This would be followed by a second knockdown of Berlanga with a follow up barrage of punches in the closing seconds of the round.

At this point Berlanga showed the appearance of a fighter that was overwhelmed and knowing he had his opponent compromised, Sheeraz closed the show in the fifth round with a flurry of unanswered blows, which forced a stoppage of the fight. The victory for Hamzah Sheeraz was the type of statement-making performance that most would like to see of a contender looking for an opportunity at a world championship.

Whether or not Sheeraz gets that opportunity as now the WBA’s top contender in the Super-Middleweight division will likely be dependent on what happens when current undisputed world champion Saul “Canelo" Alvarez faces undefeated multi-division world champion Terence Crawford in September as depending on the outcome of that fight, there may be a contractual rematch clause that would obviously force Sheeraz to wait longer than would probably be the case for his opportunity. Sheeraz can say, however, that unlike Alvarez, who dropped Berlanga early in their fight in 2024, he was able to do what the champion could not do, score a knockout win over a fighter in Berlanga, who until he lost to Alvarez was considered a knockout artist in his own right. If nothing else, it provides an effective sales hook for whomever the promoter of a fight between Alvarez and Sheeraz would be, assuming of course, that the champion is able to get by Terence Crawford.

This brings us to two marquee events that took place on July 19th. First, in Wembley Stadium in London, England, the highly anticipated rematch to reunify the Heavyweight division as world champions Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois met for the Undisputed Heavyweight championship of the world also broadcast by DAZN.

By now the narrative of the first encounter between the two in August 2023 is well known. Dubois, then a mandatory challenger going against a then unified, but not yet undisputed champion in Usyk, landing a body shot that sent the champion down in pain on the canvas. Had it been called a knockdown, which it appeared to be, Dubois would have emerged victorious as Usyk did not appear that he would have been able to beat a ten count in order to continue. While the punch appeared to land on the beltline of Usyk, it was ruled a low blow, allowing the champion time to recover and effectively taking what appeared to be a potential knockout and a world championship away from Dubois.

As most know, Usyk was able to recover and went on to knock out Dubois in the ninth round. Following that fight Usyk went on to become undisputed champion in his first fight with Tyson Fury later that year, only to be stripped of the IBF Heavyweight world championship for having to go through a contractually mandated rematch with Fury rather than face its mandatory challenger, which was coincidentally due, which happened to be Dubois, who had worked himself back into contention and was subsequently named world champion by the IBF. While that synopsis is only a brief glimpse into the political landscape of the sport of Boxing, the controversy of the first encounter on its own was enough to warrant a rematch. The addition of reunifying the Heavyweight division and the historical significance of such an occasion of an Undisputed World Heavyweight champion being determined for the first time in British soil made it a bigger event than the storyline of whether or not Usyk had benefited from what some deemed a bad call by a referee in the first fight.

Although Dubois began this fight like a fighter on a mission in immediately pressing the action from the opening bell, he ran into Usyk’s jab and counter punches. Despite being physical and trying to use his strength, Dubois, as was the case in the first fight, had trouble adjusting to Usyk’s ability to use angles and found himself getting caught in exchanges. As has often been the case throughout Usyk’s career, he was able to make his opponent fight his fight and use that opponent's aggression against them.

The systematic approach by Usyk would culminate in the fifth round, knocking Dubois down with a right hand that seemed to land on the ear, which can affect the equilibrium. Although Dubois was able to get up, Usyk would drop him a second time, this time hard and for the count with a perfectly timed counter left hook to the jaw. Oleksandr Usyk had made a statement in emphatic fashion.

Not only did Usyk become the first fighter in Boxing history to fully unify the Heavyweight division twice, but his victory in this fight also earned him his third undisputed world championship after previously accomplishing the feat as a Cruiserweight. Simply put, when one looks up the definition of Hall of Fame Resume or All-time great, a picture of Oleksandr Usyk should be next to it.

While it would be wonderful to see the Undisputed Heavyweight championship of the world remain fully unified and see Usyk attempt to somehow add to his cemented legacy, the reality is, much like Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, two fighters who have carried Women's Boxing to unprecedented heights, Oleksandr Usyk having dominated the amateur ranks where he was an Olympic Gold medalist and having completely dominated both the Cruiserweight and Heavyweight divisions as a professional seemingly has nothing left to prove and this victory by unifying the Heavyweight championship of the world for a second time, something that based on past history and the politics that be in the sport, seems unlikely to happen again, it would appear this would be the ideal scenario to end his career even though it would force the Heavyweight division into a reset period as has been the case when world champions and unified champions have retired throughout the sport’s history.

When one thinks of fighters with legacies long having been cemented in history with nothing more to prove, Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao would be on that list. In August 2021, Pacquiao lost a decision to Yordenis Ugas in an attempt to regain a World Welterweight championship. A fight that Pacquiao seemed to show decline and after a long and illustrious career, the legend and Boxing’s first eight-division world champion and politician in his native Philippines, retired from the ring.

While Pacquiao would return in December 2022 in picking up a victory in an exhibition bout against martial artist DK Yoo in a bout held in Korea, many assumed Pacquiao's career as an active fighter was concluded with his defeat to Ugas. At age forty-six and one month after his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, however, Pacquiao would return to the ring on July 19th to challenge WBC World Welterweight champion Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

Although Boxing history is full of stories regarding legendary fighters and former world champions attempting to make a comeback after a lengthy absence from active competition, this was a case where the curiosity was squarely centered on Pacquiao and given what had happened in his last fight four years earlier, there were some who were concerned for him in getting back in the ring. It did not take long for fears to dissipate as Pacquiao showed that though he was older, he could still compete and do so effectively.

While obviously not the blistering, swarming, attacking fighter he had been in his prime, Pacquiao consistently beat the younger Barrios to the punch, frequently landing two and three punch combinations and seeming to outwork the champion, who for whatever reason chose not to press the issue when he had opportunities to gain an advantage. Whether it was a hesitancy to take a risk knowing Pacquiao’s reputation for being a precision counter puncher, or simply being awed by the event in sharing the ring with a legend of the sport, gradually it appeared that Barrios had let the fight get away from him as he opted to throw single punches rather than combinations. Though effective in spots, he did not do enough in this observer’s view to retain his championship as at the conclusion of the twelve round world championship bout, I had Pacquiao winning by a margin of nine rounds to three or 117-111 in points.

Despite the view of yours truly as well as several fellow media members and fans of a clear victory for Pacquiao, the result would be a majority draw, the second consecutive draw for Barrios in his reign as champion following a lackluster performance in his previous title defense before this outing against Pacquiao against Abel Ramos on the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson event. While that does not necessarily paint Barrios in a light that makes him considered a dominant champion after back to back close calls in fights that many felt could have gone against him, the opinion of yours truly aside that Pacquiao did enough to win this fight, the fact is Mario Barrios did retain the title via a draw.

The obvious question is what happens now? An interesting development surfaced in the days following the fight in that the WBC named Pacquiao its number one contender, which appears to set up a rematch between him and Barrios. Whether or not that happens, however, will depend on both what Pacquiao decides to do next as well as whether there will be sufficient public demand for a return encounter. It should also not be overlooked that it remains unknown as of this writing how the bout, which was promoted by the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) group of promoters and broadcast on pay-per-view via digital subscription general entertainment network Prime Video did in terms of buys as those numbers have not been made public.

While one should not make assumptions based on that fact, it should also not be dismissed that the pay-per-view model has been in steady decline for years as consumers have demonstrated not only a dissatisfaction with being asked to pay the same inflated prices that led many to cut the cord of traditional cable and satellite Pay-TV service and the same pay-per-view prices, which ultimately led to networks like HBO and what is now known as Paramount+ with Showtime to exit broadcasting Boxing altogether, but also a willingness to pay for more reasonably priced subscription-based streaming options that are budget-friendly. Although this trend in consumer choice is certainly not exclusive to the PBC group of promoters or one specific network or streaming platform, it will be interesting to see what will follow as DAZN recently announced that they will soon discontinue it's selective pay-per-view approach for Boxing events and return to the subscription-based approach the streaming network implemented successfully from its entry into the United States in 2018, and now the most recent news that the Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion, a longtime stalwart of pay-per-view, will be leaving the model behind in favor of a seven-year $7.7 Billion broadcast deal with subscription-based digital streaming entertainment network Paramount+ to broadcast all of the promotion’s events including numbered (Previously pay-per-view) UFC events to subscribers at no additional cost while also maintaining their UFC Fight Pass combat sports digital streaming network, which houses the full UFC library plus other combat sports including Boxing. With Netflix also continuing to throw its hat in the Boxing ring not only with the recent successful Taylor-Serrano 3 card, but also preparing to serve as the global broadcaster for the upcoming Undisputed Super-Middleweight championship fight between Saul “Canelo" Alvarez and Terence Crawford on September 13th, arguably the biggest event on the Boxing calendar in 2025 to Netflix subscribers at no additional cost, it remains to be seen what appetite, if any, remains for pay-per-view and that is certainly not exclusive to a potential rematch between Barrios and Pacquiao, but across the combat sports genre as a whole. One can only hope that hold outs like the PBC, who have relied heavily on the pay-per-view model, despite losing numerous broadcast partners along the way and continuing mounting evidence that the pay-per-view model is no longer viable or preferred by consumers, will finally adapt their strategy to a more consumer-friendly approach while also looking to different sources of revenue that can effectively achieve what is hoped for, but rarely accomplished via pay-per-view. The reality is Boxing will be much better off by such change and the sport will only grow because of it.
