Farmer Decisions Dib For IBF Jr. Lightweight World Championship, Dib Retires

In a battle for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Jr. Lightweight world championship, top Jr. Lightweight contender Tevin Farmer successfully made the transition from contender to world champion by scoring a twelve round unanimous decision over former two-time Jr. Lightweight world champion Billy Dib on Friday night at Technology Park in New South Wales, Australia.

A tactical Boxing match, the silk southpaw Farmer used consistent lateral movement to offset the pressure of Dib. The fight at times was not necessarily the easiest to watch due to grappling between the fighters on the inside. In microcosm, this was a bout where there were two different versions for a significant portion of the fight. When Farmer was able to evade Dib’s pressure and get his punches off first, the tempo of the fight was in his favor. When the two fighters would engage on the inside however, Dib was able to have his moments. This resulted in several rounds in the first half of the fight appearing to be “Swing Rounds” where opinion as to who got the upper hand can very.

As the fight progressed, Farmer began to distance himself from Dib landing combinations and out working Dib. Farmer scored a knockdown of Dib late in the ninth round with a flush left hook to the head that sent Dib down hard. Despite appearing to be hurt, Dib was able to make it out of the round and appeared to get the better of the action in round ten. The former world champion however, could not find a way to turn the momentum in his favor and Tevin Farmer would go on to earn the unanimous decision victory.

Official scores were: 118-109, 119-108, and 120-107 all for Farmer. Tevin Farmer advances to 26-4-1, with 5 Knockouts. Billy Dib falls to 43-5, with 24 Knockouts. Unofficially, I scored this bout nine rounds to three or 117-110 in points for Tevin Farmer.

In an emotional interview at the conclusion of the main event former two-time Jr. Lightweight world champion Billy Dib announced his retirement from the sport after a fourteen-year professional career and forty-eight professional fights. The thirty-two year old native of Sydney, Australia has experienced the highs and lows that normally come with a great career in the sport. While it is also not uncommon to see fighters who retire particularly after a loss to make a return after a period of time, if this is the end for Billy Dib, he should hold his head high. Dib has always been a class act, a credit to the sport, and this observer feels that he could remain in the sport in other capacities if he wishes to.
