It has been announced that Saturday’s scheduled Undisputed Lightweight world championship bout between undefeated champion Teofimo Lopez and undefeated IBF/WBO number one contender George Kambosos has been postponed due to the champion testing positive for the COVID-19 virus. The new date for the bout will August 14thaccording to Mike Coppinger of The Athletic. The bout as well as it’s full undercard was to have headlined a Triller pay-per-view event broadcast globally by digital combat sports network FITE TV. As of this writing, the bout will still take place under the Triller platform, despite Lopez signing an extension of his promotional agreement with promoter Bob Arum and presumably penciled in for a title defense on October 2nd to be broadcast here in the United States by ESPN.
While the sport of Boxing has been largely able to avoid COVID-19-related postponements since the beginning of 2021, this is a reminder that the COVID-19 global crisis is still very much ongoing. We will keep readers updated on any developments as they become available.
