GABALLO DUNO SCORE EARLY TKO WINS

Credit: Sanman Promotions
Press Release: February 10, 2019 By Sanman Promotions – The event at the Midas Hotel and Casino ended early as the main protagonists finished their bouts with early finishes.

In the main event, Reymart “Assassin” Gaballo crushed his Japanese foe Yuya Nakamura with a thundering left hook at the middle of the second round. Nakamura protested the call for being premature but Referee Virgilio Garcia stood firm to his call.

Gaballo has improved his record to W21-KO18-L0-D0. The Filipino champ also scored two knockdowns in the opening round before disposing his foe in the following stanza. “I was trying to size him up in the opening round but his cockiness encouraged me to go for an early knockout while sticking to the game plan. I am grateful to ESPN5, Team SanMan and 1Pacman Partylist for their support”, a happy Gaballo stated.

SanMan Boxing CEO Jim Claude Manangquil was equally happy with Gaballo’s showing. “He showed us tonight that he is a legitimate champion and has a  bright future in boxing. We definitely want him to get the regular WBA Belt which our very own Nonito Donaire holds. I definitely respect Nonito but this is boxing and if a match with him is mandated by the WBA, then we are willing to fight him. This is a sport anyway.”

In the co-main event. Romero Duno lived-up to his “Ruthless” moniker by sending his Indian opponent to sleep also in the second round. Duno patiently studied and sized up his opponent in the opening and scored knockdowns midway. Smelling blood in the following round, Duno decided to go for the kill. Dhanda tried to stay away from Duno’s attacks but got caught by a perfect vicious right haymaker that caught him flush on the jaw sending him sprawled on the canvass unconscious. The Indian remained asleep for minutes with the medics attending to him. Luckily he was able to recover and rested in his corner while Duno’s hands were raised in victory. With the victory Duno’s record improves to W20 KO16 L1 D0.

In the post fight interview Duno expressed his joy but at the same time his concern for his defeated opponent. “ I am happy I won but I got so concerned when I saw him unconscious longer than I expected. I thought it was that bad. I have seen bad accidents happen in boxing. We’re both boxers so I really feel him. I dedicate this win to my family especially my parents. Thank you SanMan and ESPN5 for this opportunity”

In the co-featured bout, SanMan prospect Dave Apolinario kept his clean record as he dominated Romshane Sarguilla winning via unanimous decision. He improves his record to W11 KO7 L0 D0. Sarguilla had his good moments in some rounds but Apolinario dominated the fight with class and excellent ring generalship.

MANANQUIL BAGS WBO BELT IN JAPAN

Credit: Sanman Promotions
Press Release: February 10, 2019 By Sanman Promotions – Sanman boxer Ben Mananquil (W17 KO4 L1 D0) won big on the road as he dominates Tenta Kiyose in Japan to bag the WBO Asia Pacific Bantamweight Championship belt. The classy Mananquil started slow calculating the moves of his opponent breaking down his defense and schooling him round by round. Mananquil saw his chance in the eighth round and dropped Kiyose to the canvass. The Japanese fought back like a warrior but was no match to the stylish Filipino who won by Unanimous Decision.

“This win is so sweet because I won it far away from home. Kiyose was tough but I had him figured out. I am so happy to bring home this belt. I dedicate the win to my family, to my SanMan team and to my countrymen”, Mananquil stated.

SanMan CEO Jim Claude Manangquil added another reason for celebration as his other wards Gaballo, Duno and Apolinario all won earlier in Manila. “This is another blessing. Another belt added to the SanMan belt collection. Indeed good things come to disciplined and hardworking boxers. Ben is a harwordking kid. He deserves this win”, Manangquil said.

Credit: Alex Nunez
Press Release: February 7, 2019 By Team Moloney - World rated Bantamweight Jason “The Smooth One” Moloney returns to the ring on March 30 at the Seagulls Stadium in Tweeds Heads, NSW Australia.

Moloney, who dropped a very controversial decision in the World Boxing Super Series against IBF World Champion Emmanuel Rodriguez, will be looking to bounce back in style as he takes on the challenge of highly rated WBA Asia Champion Cris Paulino over 10 rounds.

Moloney discusses his World Boxing Super Series experience and his upcoming WBA Oceania title defence against Paulino.

The World title challenger said, “I absolutely loved being involved in the WBSS. Obviously we didn’t the result we wanted which was devastating but to represent Australia in the biggest tournament in world boxing and to fight for a world title was very special and something I will never forget.

To lose a split decision by just one round was heartbreaking but I believed I showed that I belong at the top of the division. I learnt a lot from this fight, I’m even hungrier and I just can’t wait for another chance at a World Title”.

Moloney continued, “Cris Paulino is a very solid fighter who I believe will provide a solid test and certainly come here to win. This is a big opportunity for Cris to come here and try to take my WBA world #3 ranking so I’m training extremely hard to make sure that doesn’t happen”
The Bantamweight division is buzzing at the movement, and Moloney will be primed for another shot at the World title with a victory at the Seagulls Club.

The Smooth One opened up about his plans for 2019.

Moloney said, “I have my sights set on the winner of the WBSS, the WBC Champion- Nordine Oubaali or the WBA Interim Champion- Reymart Gaballo. These are all fights which I’m confident I can win. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get my chance and to become World Champion!”

Manager Tony Tolj gave his take on the March 30 Promotion and his plans for Moloney going forward.

He said, “We have a great card full of WBA title fights that include WBA World #10 Billel “Baby Face” Dib defending his WBA Oceania Title and “The Captain Kerry Foley contesting WBA & WBC regional titles in our blockbuster card as well as a stacked undercard as part of our Boxing Mania 5 event.

“It’s going to be a massive event, and Jason Moloney is looking explosive in the gym. He has gone to a new level and I’m confident on him making a statement on March 30 and the World Championships will come!”

Garcia Defeats Cheeseman To Retain European Jr. Middleweight Championship

Undefeated European Jr. Middleweight champion Sergio Garcia successfully retained his championship with a convincing twelve round unanimous decision over previously undefeated former British Jr. Middleweight champion Ted Cheeseman on Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London, England. For twelve rounds Garcia and Cheeseman engaged in near non-stop combat with little or no let up for the entire duration of the bout. Despite the high pace which the fight was fought at, Garcia’s consistent offensive rhythm and cleaner punches were the story of this fight as he generally got the better of the action throughout and outworked Cheeseman throughout the bout. After twelve rounds Garcia retained his championship with a unanimous decision. Official scores were: 119-109, (On two scorecards) and 115-114 all for Garcia.

Sergio Garcia advances to 29-0, with 13 Knockouts. Ted Cheeseman falls to 15-1, with 9 Knockouts.

In a bout for the vacant Commonwealth Middleweight championship undefeated prospect Felix Cash scored a first round knockout over Rasheed Abolaji. Cash dropped Abolaji with a jab early in the round. Although Abolaji was able to beat the count, Cash would drop him again with a flush right hand. As he had done after the first knockdown, Abolaji was able to get up, but on unsteady legs the fight was stopped by Referee Marcus McDonnell. Official time of the stoppage was: 2:45 of round one.

Felix Cash advances to 11-0, with 7 Knockouts. Rasheed Abolaji falls to 11-5-1, with 6 Knockouts.

In the Cruiserweight division, undefeated prospect Lawrence Okolie scored a third round stoppage of Tamas Lodi. Lodi, who had taken the fight on short notice was dropped in each of the three rounds for a total of four knockdowns before the fight was stopped by Referee Howard Foster at 1:13 of the third round.

Lawrence Okolie advances to 11-0, with 8 Knockouts. Tamas Lodi falls to 20-12-2, with 17 Knockouts.

In a bout for the WBA Continental Light-Heavyweight championship, Craig Richards scored a third round knockout of Jake Ball. Richards was able to frequently counter Ball’s offense and scored knockdowns with his right hand. Ball did not seem to have much punch resistance and the one-sided encounter was halted stopped at 2:27 of round three after Ball had been knocked down in all three rounds.

Craig Richards advances to 14-1, with 8 Knockouts. Jake Ball falls to 12-2, with 9 Knockouts.

Also in the Light-Heavyweight division, undefeated Dana Zaxo scored a four round unanimous decision over Tayer Mehmed. Dana Zaxo advances to 4-0, with 2 Knockouts. Tayer Mehmed falls to 7-34-3, with 1 Knockout.

In the Heavyweight division, undefeated Fabio Wardley scored a first round knockout over Morgan Dessaux. Official time of the stoppage was 1:43 of round one. Fabio Wardley advances to 6-0, with 5 Knockouts. Morgan Dessaux falls to 5-5, with 5 Knockouts.

In the Super-Middleweight division, undefeated John Docherty scored a first round knockout of Przemyslaw Binienda. John Docherty advances to 3-0, with 3 Knockouts. Przemyslaw Binienda falls to 2-23, with 2 Knockouts.

Rounding out the card, in the Middleweight division undefeated Scott Fitzgerald scored a second round knockout of Radoslav Mitev. Scott Fitzgerald advances to 12-0, with 9 Knockouts. Radoslav Mitev falls to 12-46-2, with 4 Knockouts.

All and all, this card provided a look at some of the rising stars on the British and European Boxing scene. For Sergio Garcia, an unbeaten European champion who was largely unknown to many particularly here in the United States prior to his fight with rising British prospect Ted Cheeseman, his victory over Cheeseman should open up an opportunity to move into the world rankings in the 154lb. Jr. Middleweight division. In contrast to the twenty-nine fight veteran Garcia, Cheeseman will now go back to the drawing board and look to rebound from the first loss of his career. Although Cheeseman did not come out of this fight as the winner, it should not be overlooked that he put in a determined effort and was very “Game” in defeat in what was an extremely grueling battel. It will be how Cheeseman performs moving forward as to whether or not his loss to Sergio Garcia is a small bump in the road in the career of a potential world champion.

WHAT MOTIVATES GABALLO?

Credit: Sanman Promotions
Press Release: January 31, 2019 by Sanman Promotions – Interim WBA World Bantamweight Champion Reymart “Assassin” Gaballo (W20 KO17 L0 D0) will face Japanese prospect Yuya Nakamura on February 9 at the Midas Hotel and Casino in Manila. The event is presented by ESPN 5 (In the Philippines) who will telecast the fight live at 7:00 PM.

Ahead of the fight, Gaballo has been concerned about his ill grandfather who has been suffering from cancer. Latest update was that his grandpa has already passed away. This however did not stop Gaballo from religiously performing his training regimen. “I know for a fact that Nakamura will be very prepared for this fight. Japanese boxers are natural tough warriors. I will never take chances. I maybe the favorite but I am just as hungry as any upcoming contender. I am so sad about my grandpa’s death and I am dedicating this fight to his loving memory. I will also win this fight for my father who has also been hospitalized. I want to make my family proud. Moreover, I wanna show the fans what I am made of as a warrior. “

For Sanman CEO Jim Claude Manangquil, a victory will open doors to bigger fights for Gaballo. “He is already an interim world champion. We hope to grab the regular championship belt within the year. Gaballo is hardworking. No doubt he is in line to be Philippines’  next world champion.”

Gaballo further stated in closing, “I am very grateful to Sanman, Moros gym and to ESPN 5 for the untiring support. I will win this coz I know bigger fights are in store for me. It feels great to fight in front of my countrymen much more that the fight is televised on national TV again. I will do my best to entertain.”

Farmer-Carroll Press Conference Quotes

Credit:Ed Mulholland/Matchroom Boxing USA
Press Release: January 30, 2019 (Originally released January 29, 2019) by DAZN/ Matchroom Boxing USA - PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 29, 2019: With just over six weeks until the fighters square off in front of thousands of Philadelphia fight fans, Matchroom USA gathered in the City of Brotherly Love on Tuesday afternoon to announce the March 15 card at the Liacouras Center. The action-packed evening will be headlined by IBF World Super Featherweight Titlist Tevin Farmer defending his belt in his hometown against undefeated Jono Carroll. The action-packed event will also feature IBF & WBA World Female Lightweight Titlist Katie Taylor in a unification bout against the WBO World Female Lightweight Titlist Rose Volante, Philly’s Gabriel Rosado will go up against Maciej Sulecki in a middleweight tilt, and two Philadelphia natives, Hank Lundy and Avery Sparrow, will face off in a lightweight bout in front of their hometown crowd. In anticipation, the fighters took the podium to discuss their upcoming training camp, preparation, and thoughts on the fights - which will be streamed exclusively on DAZN.

Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing

“We are delighted to be in the Liacouras Center on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, and live on DAZN. We are here for Philly’s very own Tevin Farmer to defend his title against Jono Carroll. Tevin is one of the most active fighters in the world right now and certainly the most active champion. In the co-main event is my favorite fighter in the sport today, full stop, and that’s Katie Taylor. It will be a great night of action. The United States, especially Philadelphia, should be excited about Tevin’s amazing story. It’s an amazing success story and we are happy that we can deliver it on DAZN so everyone can learn more about what a great champion Tevin Farmer is. DAZN is doing all of this as part of a subscription plan. These other guys are charging you $80 or $90 a month for these PPVs. We aren’t doing that. DAZN is doing big things. Andrade two weeks ago, Munguia last week. Canelo vs. Jacobs just announced. More exciting things coming soon. It is an exciting time and DAZN is at the forefront.”

Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment

“Tevin is the most active champion in the sport. You can fact check this, but seriously, when was the last time a champion fought four times in eight months? I don’t think it’s ever happened. The reason that is possible is because of Eddie Hearn, Matchroom and especially DAZN USA. They’ve all given Tevin a great platform to be an active champion, which is exactly what Tevin told me he wanted to be before signing this co-promotional contract. He is a true Philly fighter and that will show on March 15.”

Tevin Farmer

“Thank you to Philadelphia for coming out. Thanks to Eddie Hearn, Lou DiBella and DAZN for making this. First, Jono, that’s not a Philly beard, bro. Second, you got this fight because I chose you. Nothing else. I just beat your cousin, now I am going to beat you. I am tired of beating your family. Listen, all that sad story about what you have done, you aren’t going to convince Philly. They are with me. I am going to beat you up real bad, right in front of all of Philadelphia. You just got a draw, how did you get a draw? You looked past him, right? You got on Twitter and called me cocky. I’m not. How much you making for this fight? Oh. You don’t want to bet?  Well, Philly, I am going to beat his ass anyway. And you know what, after I beat you, I am going to take you for cheesesteaks. Not Pat’s, Geno’s and all that either. I’m going to take you to the Papi spot. That’s the best spot.

“So listen, if you don’t know me, I am Tevin Farmer. I am a real Philly fighter. I came from nothing and I owe it all to my team. This year I am looking to fight four or five times, maybe six if I can. I want to go down as one of the best to ever do it and 2019 is going to be a huge year for me.”

Jono Carroll

“Thank you to Eddie, it’s been a pleasure. If it weren’t for Matchroom, I would’ve just gave up and walked away a long time ago. And now, fighting in America, this is a dream come true. I love Philly, I know you have heard me jawing with Tevin but I do love the city and all the fans. I don’t care what this little pea-brain says in the background. I have been an underdog in most of my fights but I keep winning and winning and winning. Come March 15, this kid Farmer won’t know what hits him. I am going to take his belt, easy work. I’ll take that home with me. If he beats me, you know what, I will take my hat off and tell him that he is a hell of a man. You know why? Because it is going to take a hell of a man to beat me.”

Katie Taylor

“Thank you so much, it is great to be in Philadelphia. It is a great fight city. I can’t wait to be one step closer to being undisputed champion. Thank you to DAZN. They are keeping fighters active and the best are fighting the best. That’s exactly what the sport needs.”

Gabriel Rosado

“It’s a great opportunity to be back home. It is exciting to be back. This is where it all started. (Avery) Sparrow and Hank (Lundy) can relate to that. This is where it started. I was coming up out here working a graveyard shift, busting my ass, working for $10 an hour. I haven’t fought in Philly since 2012. I believe this is the second half of my career. Everyone was surprised in my last fight, expecting a war, but I am getting wiser. I will put on a show on March 15. Congratulations to Tevin Farmer, we had conversations about all of this happening and I told him to keep doing what he was doing. Like, ‘Trust me, keep doing what you’re doing.’ And look where we are now. Looking forward to March 15.”

Hank Lundy

“Thanks to everyone involved for bringing this fight to Philly. You don’t want to miss none of this. None of it. This is going to be a great night of fights. If you fight Hank Lundy, you need to live a clean life. If not, it shows. And the thing you should know about Hank Lundy is I’m a dog. I come to fight and leave it all in the ring. No matter what.

“And yeah, I fought and lost to Crawford. He’s the pound-for-pound champion though and I went out there to try and knock him out. He got me first, it’s all good. But I’m a dog and that young pup is going to sleep. Avery is going to sleep that night.”

Avery Sparrow

“I am blessed for this opportunity to be here. Thanks to Eddie Hearn, DAZN and everyone else for being here. Thanks to Hank for taking the fight, it’s an honor. Come March 15, it’s all business. He had his title shot and now I am looking to get mine one day. I’ve been working for a long time, fighting in the amateurs a long time and now I am here to prove myself.”

Thoughts On Pacquiao-Broner

The encounter between former world champions Manny Pacquiao and Adrien Broner gave all the appearance of a stylistic chess match. In previewing this fight, yours truly stated that this figured to be a tactical encounter between an offensive-minded fighter with the ability to use lateral movement to throw punches from every conceivable angle against a defensive-minded fighter, who was known for his ability to counter punch. The idea of how this fight would be fought that yours truly had was exactly what transpired when Pacquiao and Broner squared off on January 19th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

For twelve rounds, the offensive-minded fighter in Pacquiao out worked and out boxed the defensive-minded Broner to earn a convincing twelve round unanimous decision. For those who have followed my work through the years, you know that I usually like to provide a more thorough analysis of what goes on in a fight. This time however, I feel it is more appropriate to describe things in short-form.

In short, the tactical Boxing match that Pacquiao and Broner fought can best be summed up as one fighter, Pacquiao generally throwing punches in three and four punch combinations and keeping his opponent Broner on the defensive. Although Broner would periodically land solid counter punches throughout the twelve round bout, the former four-division world champion simply did not engage in enough offense consistently to win the fight as I scored the bout eleven rounds to one or 118-109 in favor of Pacquiao.

Sometimes even a technical fight between two world-class boxers can be summed up in the simplest of terms. A lopsided contest where one fighter simply bested the other. Unlike some “Big” or “Major” fights in the sport where the recurring theme afterward usually involves some element of “Controversy”, this was not one of those events. At least, not in terms of what one would think of as a “Legitimate Controversy.”

While this observer does not want to spend too much time discussing this element of what I felt was an otherwise one-sided fight and a solid performance by future Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao, what cannot and should not be ignored is the accusation that was made after the fight. An accusation Broner made following his decision loss of a “Robbery” citing that he had beaten Pacquiao and eluded to the possibility that the scoring was influenced by the potential of a rematch between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, which may or may not happen later this year.

Although one can understand a fighter or for that matter any athlete’s disappointment following a loss, I commented following the fight across social media platforms that I found Broner’s conduct after the decision was announced, particularly in his post-fight interview with Showtime’s Jim Gray as “Disgusting” and shared my view that it was a clear win for Pacquiao and felt that the scoring was “Appropriate.” The latter regarding scoring is a consistent topic for anyone who covers the sport and/or Combat Sports in general and the term “Appropriate” is not always used to describe the scoring of fights.  Even though it is understandable that one would take a loss hard, particularly a loss that came on a relatively big stage, I felt Broner’s conduct, which included expletives, in the interview conducted by Gray was “Inappropriate” and frankly “Classless.”

The twenty-nine year old Broner has won four world championships in four different weight classes. While some might be tempted to describe his career as too much, too soon, I won’t do that. Many great fighters throughout the history of the sport have gone through ups and downs in terms of wins and losses. Perhaps after having some time to reflect on what happened in the fight, Broner will be able to figure out what went wrong and be able to adapt in future fights. From my perspective, I mentioned in previewing this fight that the key for Broner would be to find a balance between not negating his defensive style, while also allowing himself to establish a consistent offensive rhythm as to not allow himself to be out worked over the course of the fight. A task that yours truly said could be easier said than done, proved to be just that.  According CompuBox statistics, in twelve rounds Pacquiao out landed Broner 112 of 568 for 20% total punches thrown compared to Broner’s 50 of 295 for 17%.

A routine point of contention among some fans and even at times those of us who cover the sport is that there are times where final punch statistics compiled by CompuBox do not always serve as an accurate illustration of what goes on in a fight. There are times however, particularly in a clear fight such as this where the statistics are “Spot On” as to what went on inside the ring. The more telling statistics beyond the final punch stats when one views the statistics round by round is the fact that Broner failed to land a double-digit number of punches in any of the twelve rounds and only averaged between one to seven landed punches per round. Broner’s most active round and the round I felt he won was in round four where in the only round of the fight he out landed Pacquiao he was able to land 7 of 20 punches compared to Pacquiao’s 4 of 11. Simply put, unless a fighter is scoring knockdowns with single punches, it is almost impossible to win a decision on the scorecards. Bottom line, you cannot win rounds unless you actively throw and land punches consistently.

While some are likely of the opinion that the potential rematch between Pacquiao and Mayweather will be what’s next for Manny Pacquiao, as is the norm after fights, this observer feels there are other options that could be available to Pacquiao going forward.  Pacquiao, who with his win over Broner retained his interim/regular champion status in the WBA’s Welterweight rankings would be an ideal option for the winner of the January 26th WBA World Welterweight championship fight between undefeated champion Keith Thurman and longtime contender Josesito Lopez. Pacquiao could also be a potential opponent for the winner of the upcoming IBF Welterweight world championship fight between undefeated champion Errol Spence and undefeated three-division world champion Mikey Garcia, who is moving up in weight to challenge Spence.

Either option may indeed be more viable for the forty year old Pacquiao than a rematch with the currently retired forty-two year old Mayweather. Although Pacquiao would probably be considered an underdog against either winner of those fights based on age if nothing else, a potential fight against either winner could be more well received than a rematch of an encounter with Mayweather that failed to live up to expectations.

While the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight drew over 4.4 million pay-per-view buys at $100, the concept of pay-per-view has changed significantly since that fight in 2015. If one were to also take into the equation that Showtime, HBO, and Mayweather and Pacquiao themselves faced litigation from disgruntled fans following that event, it is hard to envision the public being willing to pay that kind of fee again especially when one considers the rise of subscription-based streaming options that have entered the sports landscape and have served to fill the void left by HBO, who is no longer involved in the sport. With the concept of pay-per-view changing and with rare exceptions buy rates continuing to underperform, it is time for those who continue to rely on the overpriced and undervalued model of pay-per-view to think of an alternative. Perhaps the alternative would be more well received by the public than asking that same public to pay what will likely be an even more expensive fee than the $100 Mayweather-Pacquiao event to see a rematch that no matter what happens will likely fail to live up to expectations.

Andrade Stops Akavov In 12 To Retain Middleweight World Championship

Undefeated two-division world champion Demetrius Andrade scored a twelfth round stoppage of WBO number eight Middleweight contender Artur Akavov to retain his WBO World Middleweight championship on Friday night in the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY. In what was a tactical fight early on, Andrade’s hand speed and combination punching gradually took over the fight. Despite being tactically outgunned, Akavov was quite “Game” and never stopped trying to turn the momentum in his favor. In the twelfth and final round, a body shot followed by a left hand that did not land appeared to briefly stagger Akavov and Referee Arthur Mercante, Jr. stepped in and stopped the fight.  Akavov, who had taken some punishment throughout the fight, protested the stoppage, but it was to no avail as Mercante told the native of Novocherkassk, Russia that he was concerned for his welfare and said there will be another day.

Official time of the stoppage was 2:36 of round twelve. Demetrius Andrade advances to 27-0, with 17 Knockouts. Artur Akavov falls to 19-3, with 8 Knockouts.

In a shocking upset, longtime Jr. Welterweight and Welterweight contender Pablo Cesar Cano scored an impressive first round stoppage of former three-division world champion Jorge Linares.  Cano’s naturally bigger size and punching power were the story of this fight as he scored three knockdowns of the future Hall of Famer Linares before the fight was stopped by Referee Rocky Gonzalez.  Official time of the stoppage was 2:48 of round one.

Pablo Cesar Cano advances to 32-7-1, with 22 Knockouts. Jorge Linares falls to 45-5, with 28 Knockouts.

In a battle for the vacant WBO Women’s Jr. Bantamweight world championship, multi-division world champion Amanda Serrano became a seven-division world champion as she scored a first round knockout over IBF Jr. Bantamweight world champion Eva Voraberger. A left hook to Voraberger’s liver ended the fight almost as quickly as it began as Voraberger went down and could not beat the count of Referee Sparkle Lee. Official time of the stoppage was :35 of round one.

Amanda Serrano advances to 36-1-1, with 26 Knockouts. Eva Voraberger falls to 24-6, with 11 Knockouts.

In the Jr. Welterweight division, former WBO Jr. Welterweight world champion Chris Algieri scored a lopsided ten round unanimous decision over veteran Danial Gonzalez. Algieri put on an impressive display of Boxing in the first seven rounds of the fight using lateral movement and effective body punching to out box Gonzalez. Algieri suffered a cut in round seven under his left eye as a result of an accidental clash of heads. Gonzalez, who has served as a sparring partner for Algieri in the past came on aggressively late in the fight, but was unable to turn the ebb and flow in his favor, despite the former world champion backing up throughout the latter stages of the fight. The result of a unanimous decision in favor of Algieri after ten rounds was not well received by the crowd in attendance as they booed the decision.  Official scores were 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94 all in favor of Algieri.  Unofficially, I scored this fight 97-93 in Algieri’s favor.

Chris Algieri advances to 23-3, with 8 Knockouts. Daniel Gonzalez falls to 17-2-1, with 7 Knockouts.

In a bout for the IBF Jr. Featherweight world championship, undefeated champion TJ Doheny successfully made the first defense of his world title by scoring an eleventh round stoppage of IBF number ten rated contender Ryohei Takashi. Both fighters suffered cuts in round two as a result of an accidental clash of heads, but despite the cut, Doheny was in control of the fight throughout and scored a knockdown of the challenger in round three.  The end came in the eleventh round when Referee Michael Ortega stopped the fight at a moment that appeared odd in that although Takahashi had sustained punishment throughout much of the fight, he wasn’t in trouble when the fight was stopped.  Official time of the stoppage was 2:18 of round eleven.

TJ Doheny advances to 21-0, with 15 Knockouts. Ryohei Takahashi falls to 16-4-1, with 6 Knockouts.

Undefeated Welterweight Reshat Mati scored the third win of his young career by scoring a first round knockout over Benjamin Borteye. Mati scored a knockdown of Borteye early in the round and was able to get a stoppage of Borteye from Referee Miguel Rosario at 1:06 of round one.

Reshat Mati advances to 3-0, with 2 Knockouts. Benjamin Borteye falls to 4-4, with 4 Knockouts.

The first defense of his WBO Middleweight world championship could likely set up some interesting possibilities for him in 2019 and beyond in the talent deep 160lb. Middleweight division. Among his possible options would obviously be to face the winner of the upcoming Middleweight unification bout between WBC/WBA/IBO world champion Saul Alvarez and recently crowned IBF world champion Daniel Jacobs, which will take place on May 4th. Another possible option would be for Andrade to defend his crown against former longtime Middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin, who as of this writing remains a fighter without a broadcaster to televise his fights, with DAZN, ESPN, and the Premier Boxing Champions brand, which includes both Showtime and Fox as potential future homes for the former world champion. If Golovkin were to sign with DAZN, the possibility of full unification of the Middleweight championship of the world is very real as all the current world champions will be fighting on one platform and a fighter who in the opinion of many is still a world champion in Gennady Golovkin would also be a player in that mix.

In closing one brief observation. A topic of some in the days ahead might concern the stoppages of both the Doheny-Takahashi and Andrade-Akavov fights. Although some might view the stoppages of these two fights as premature and may even call them controversial, it is important to remember that the knockout of Adonis Stevenson in December of last year at the hands of Oleksandr Gvozdyk, a brutal knockout that resulted in Stevenson being hospitalized after suffering traumatic brain injury is still fresh in the minds and hearts of everyone in the sport.  As yours truly has stated since that fight both in my work here at The Boxing Truth® as well as on social media that under circumstances like what happened in the Stevenson-Gvozdyk fight, referees and athletic commissions may be a little extra cautious in trying to determine when a fight should be stopped following a situation like Stevenson’s.

While Takahashi and Akavov were not in a situation similar to Stevenson, both did sustain punishment throughout their respective bouts and it is understandable that the referees of those bouts Arthur Mercante, Jr. and Michael Ortega were thinking of the long-term welfare of both fighters. Sometimes it is better for a fighter to come back to fight another day rather than taking one punch too many.
