Zepeda Defeats Castaneda In Las Vegas

Former world title challenger Jose Zepeda scored a lopsided ten round unanimous decision over prospect Kendo Castaneda on Tuesday night at the MGM Grand Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. Over the course of the Jr. Welterweight bout, Zepeda demonstrated a well-balanced attack, frequently mixing his offense to the body and head, consistently beating Castaneda to the punch, as well as displaying effective counter punching. A full display of Boxing skills that allowed Zepeda to box his way to a convincing unanimous decision victory. Official scores were: 97-93, and 98-92 (On two scorecards) in favor of Zepeda. Jose Zepeda advances to 32-2, with 25 Knockouts. Kendo Castaneda falls to 17-2, with 8 Knockouts.

Also on this card:

Jr. Lightweight Luis Lopez scored a hard-fought ten round split decision over highly touted prospect Andy Vences. In what was a closely fought bout from the outset, Lopez nearly ended the fight in round six when he staggered Vences with an uppercut to the head and proceeded to batter him with a barrage of punches. To his credit, Vences survived the barrage of punches and appeared to outwork Lopez down the stretch, despite suffering a cut over the left eye in round six from an accidental clash of heads. The three judges were split in their verdict at the conclusion of the ten round bout with all three turning in identical scores, but with two judges scoring the bout 96-94 in favor of Lopez. Luis Lopez advances to 21-2, with 11 Knockouts. Andy Vences falls to 23-2-1, with 12 Knockouts.

Undefeated Lightweight Eric Puente continued his winning ways with a four round majority decision over Diego Elizondo. Eric Puente advances to 3-0, with 0 Knockouts. Diego Elizondo falls to 2-2-2, with 0 Knockouts.

Rising Welterweight prospect Genaro Gamez scored a first round knockout of Reymond Yanong. The bout was stopped with one second remaining in round one. Genaro Gamez advances to 10-1, with 7 Knockouts. Reymond Yanong falls to 11-6-1, with 6 Knockouts.

Unbeaten Lightweight prospect Andres Cortes overcame a knockdown in round four to score a hard-fought eight round unanimous decision over Alejandro Salinas. This fight was one that saw both fighters engaging in exchanges from the opening bell. Cortes suffered a deep gash over the left eye in the second round as a result of an accidental clash of heads. Salinas scored the knockdown of Cortes with a short right hand to the head in the fourth round where it was ruled that the ropes kept Cortes from going down. Cortes was however, able to rally down the stretch to earn the decision win. Official scores were: 76-75, 79-73, and 77-74 all in favor of Cortes. Andres Cortes advances to 13-0, with 7 Knockouts. Alejandro Salinas falls to 10-4, with 5 Knockouts.

Undefeated Bantamweight prospect Gabriel Muratalla began the evening by scoring a hard-foght four round unanimous decision over veteran Sergio Lopez. Lopez began the bout by attempting to jump on Muratalla. Although Lopez was aggressive throughout the duration of the fight, Muratalla gradually landed the cleaner punches as well as countered Lopez effectively throughout to earn the unanimous decision victory. Official scores were: 39-37, and 40-36 (On two scorecards) in favor of Muratalla. Gabriel Muratalla advances to 4-0, with 3 Knockouts. Sergio Lopez falls to 4-6-3, with 0 Knockouts.

The consistent theme of Boxing cards and really all of sports that are trying as best as possible to resume during the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic is fighters/athletes looking to stay active under difficult circumstances. While several of the Boxing cards that have taken place over the last month can be described as fighters for the most part going through the motions, and this card falls in line with that description, there has also been instances where prospects and contenders have been tested. This card featured fighters ranging from the early stages of their careers to those who are nearing contender status having to face tests inside the ring. While for some they were able to come through successfully in those tests that will only help in their overall development, others experienced a setback. If circumstances regarding COVID-19 allow however, all of the above could be back in the ring in a relatively short time. We will have to wait and see not only whether circumstances will allow for the sport to remain active in some aspects, but also whether those circumstances will also make it possible for a more adequate discussion regarding what the respective plans for future bouts for the fighters that have been competing to occur in a more thorough form.

Thoughts On Pedraza-LesPierre

The Jr. Welterweight bout between two-division world champion Jose Pedraza and former world title challenger Mikkel LesPierre would under normal circumstances be a compelling encounter between one fighter, who is seeking an opportunity at a world championship in a third weight class after successfully winning world championships as a Jr. Lightweight and Lightweight, against a fighter who’s lone career defeat came in a failed bid to win a world championship. As many Boxing fans know however, the sport and the world as a whole are in far from normal times and circumstances due to the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic.

A seemingly well-matched encounter between the two top Jr. Welterweight contenders would serve as a reminder of that fact as the bout, which was originally scheduled to take place on June 18th at the MGM Grand Convention Center was cancelled on the morning of the closed-door event when it was revealed that a member of LesPierre’s team had tested positive for the COVID-19 virus and under the protocols set by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), the bout was immediately cancelled. Despite so much uncertainty regarding the virus and how various sports are going to be able to resume activity and the potential of activity being halted at any time because of the ongoing epidemic, Pedraza-LesPierre also served as an example of how a setback in fights taking place can be rectified in a relatively short time.

After the fighters and their respective teams all tested negative for the virus, the fight finally took place on July 2nd at the same MGM Grand Convention Center. Despite how this fight appeared on paper, it was logical to question what effect the temporary cancellation would have on both fighters in addition to wondering how both fighters were able to prepare for the bout. After all, the current circumstances the world finds itself in because of this virus has caused stress, anxiety, and worry for many, the same holds true for fighters as well. It should also be noted that in the case of LesPierre, he has been combating the virus on the front lines as one of many hospital workers throughout the United States. Although most fans could assume that a fighter in LesPierre’s position as a top contender would be able to devote themselves full time to Boxing, it is not always the case. Nevertheless, it was curious to see how LesPierre would be able to balance his status as an essential worker under circumstances of an epidemic with his ongoing efforts in the Boxing ring and how the cancellation would factor into how he was able to prepare for this fight.

It became clear from early on in the fight that it would be Pedraza, who was less impacted by the circumstances, which this fight took place. The former world champion established the tempo of the combat by throwing consistent combinations, but also changing levels in mixing his attack of LesPierre to the body and head. Pedraza, as he has done in previous fights, also switched between an orthodox and southpaw stance throughout. Such tactics made it very difficult for LesPierre to get into a consistent offensive rhythm . This does not mean however, that LesPierre was not competitive as he and Pedraza traded flash knockdowns in the fifth round off the scheduled ten round bout.

Pedraza would reestablish control of the fight following the fifth round and would score a second knockdown of LesPierre in the tenth and final round to seal a convincing unanimous decision victory. Although this was a dominant performance by Jose Pedraza and at times fights that are fought in this way do not lend much in the way of thorough analysis beyond a summary of what took place, it was still an impressive performance by Pedraza and really both fighters under the circumstances.

While this observer would love to provide some thoughts regarding what both fighters might do coming out of this fight, it is important to stress once more as I have done in previous coverage of Boxing cards that have taken place over the last month since the sport began the process of attempting to resume under the circumstances of COVID-19 that these are far from normal circumstances and the reality that some may not want to hear or accept is any and all activity in the sport of Boxing as well as all sports and entertainment ventures will continue to be largely dictated by the ongoing situation of the COVID-19 virus. It thus becomes a seemingly impossible task to speculate on what potential fights could be made and when they might take place.

It is important for any cynics/critics however, to remember that the fighters who are competing are doing so not only for the opportunity the circumstances of this virus has presented in a round about way, but are also doing so knowing the potential risks involved. Although Mikkel LesPierre came out on the short end of this fight, it should not be overlooked that the initial cancellation of his fight against Jose Pedraza as well as his status as an essential worker in helping to administer medical care to patients battling the COVID-19 virus as well as the uncertainty of everything, he would have been fully within his rights to decline rescheduling the fight so soon and in the eyes of yours truly, would have been justified in doing so if that were his choice. While we are glad to see Boxing resuming in some form, there are more important things in life than the pursuit of world championships and becoming an all-time great in any sport. The fact that LesPierre chose to get this fight in the ring as soon as possible as well as Jose Pedraza being willing to do so as well when all too often when circumstances prevent fights from taking place for one reason or another can lead to both gamesmanship and further delays, deserves the utmost respect from everyone involved in the sport of Boxing. An example that one can only hope others follow even after the COVID-19 epidemic ends, whenever that might be.

Fonseca returns to the ring on August 4 in Nicaragua on a Buffalo Boxing card live on national TV in the country that has produced legendary fighters such as Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez. Dragon Fire Boxing's Tolj opened up about the plans for Fonseca going forward.

He said, "I'm very happy that Fonseca will be back in the ring on August 4 in Nicaragua. It will be on a Buffalo Boxing Promotion and they have been a mainstay promotion in the region for close to two decades now. He will box in front of millions on national television, so this is a really good opportunity for him against a good opponent.

"The plan is to continue to develop Fonseca into a position where the right opportunities will come. Rosendo Alvarez and I will then analyze the next move for him but our goal, for now, is to continue to build Fonseca's profile prior to getting him big opportunities all over the world. I have a lot of belief in Francisco and the team and I believe the sky's the limit for Fonseca."

Saucedo Decisions Fredrickson

Former Jr. Welterweight world title challenger Alex Saucedo scored a solid ten round unanimous decision over veteran Sonny Fredrickson on Tuesday night at the MGM Grand Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. In his first fight since November of last year, Saucedo was nearly non-stop in throwing punches from the opening bell as he frequently pressed Fredrickson back against the ropes and centered his attack to the body and head.

While Saucedo was clearly the more active of the two fighters and brought the fight to Fredrickson, Fredrickson was effective in spots in countering Saucedo off the ropes. Although Saucedo’s pressure was the consistent theme of this fight, Fredrickson was most effective when he was able to use his legs and keep the fight in the center of the ring. As the fight progressed however, Fredrickson showed a willingness to be on the ropes and simply did not let his hands go consistently enough to sway the ebb and flow of the fight in his favor. This allowed Saucedo to earn a convincing unanimous decision victory. Official scores were 99-91, 98-92, and 100-90 all in favor of Saucedo. Alex Saucedo advances to 30-1, with 19 Knockouts. Sonny Fredrickson falls to 21-3, with 14 Knockouts.

Also on this card:

Jr. Welterweight prospect Josue Vargas scored a dominant ten round unanimous decision over Salvador Briceno. Vargas showcased a full display of skills over the course of the fight using hand speed, lateral movement, counter punching, and defense to outbox Briceno. The lone adversity that Vargas had to encounter during the fight was being cut over the left eye as a result of an accidental clash of heads in round four. Official scores were 99-91, and 100-90 (On two scorecards) in favor of Vargas. Josue Vargas advances to 17-1, with 9 Knockouts. Salvador Briceno falls to 17-6, with 11 Knockouts.

In the first of the three Jr. Welterweight bouts on this card, undefeated prospect John Bauza scored an eight round unanimous decision over Larry Fryers. Over the course of the fight, Bauza consistently caught Fryers as he came forward and was generally the sharper fighter throughout. Official scores were 79-73, and 80-72 (On two scorecards) in favor of Bauza. John Bauza advances to 14-0, with 5 Knockouts. Larry Fryers falls to 11-3, with 4 Knockouts.

Middleweight Isiah Jones scored a six round majority decision over previously undefeated Donte Stubbs. Official scores were 59-55, 58-56, and 57-57. Isiah Jones advances to 9-2, with 3 Knockouts. Donte Stubbs falls to 6-1, with 2 Knockouts.

While this card was largely centered on the 140lb. Jr. Welterweight division and did not offer much in the way of thrills, it is again to point out as this observer has pointed out in his previous coverage of Boxing cards that have taken place under the circumstances of the COVID-19 epidemic, these are not normal circumstances for the fighters, the sport as a whole, and the world in general. The thirty four scheduled rounds over four fights on this card did however, provide a look at a few rising prospects and one former world title challenger, who is likely to be in the mix for a second opportunity at a world championship.

Unfortunately, the theme that continues to hang over the sport and the world as a whole will continue to be the COVID-19 crisis as diagnosed cases and deaths related to the virus continues to increase. For now, all the fighters who have competed over the last few weeks as well as those who have bouts scheduled in the weeks and months ahead can hope for is that things improve regarding the virus and whenever that happens it will at minimum be an easier task to plan and focus on any potential fights that could be made.

Where Things Stand For Boxing Under COVID-19

Originally, this column was to primarily center around a notable bout that took place over the course of the final weekend of June 2020. As this observer began his initial process of envisioning the layout of this column, it became clear that it would be more appropriate to not only share some insight on the return of WBC Jr. Lightweight world champion Miguel Berchelt, but to also share some of my impressions on what we have seen thus far since Boxing resumed amid the COVID-19 epidemic and where the sport stands.

It should be no secret to readers or those who know me that I have approached the resumption of Boxing under the circumstances of COVID-19 with a day to day mindset. While many have proclaimed “Boxing Is Back” and such a slogan has served as a marketing tool of sorts, it is important to remember that the world is in unprecedented times and even though many are egger to resume everyday life, yours truly had kept a mindset that the resumption of Boxing much like other sports could be temporary and that will largely depend on the ongoing situation with the COVID-19 virus.

Although numbers regarding the virus remain not encouraging, the sport has shown for the time being that it can operate behind closed doors, despite some scheduled fights being postponed or cancelled due to positive COVID-19 tests. Some who cover the sport like yours truly, may be inclined to focus a good portion of attention on the positive tests and would be justified in pointing out the risks of exposure and thus the risk to the fighters and their camps. Readers are more than welcome to read through the various material that I have covered in the weeks since the sport resumed for more information about the positive tests that have occurred thus far.

In the interest of both honestly and keeping in mind my feelings regarding the sport resuming that I have shared both here on The Boxing Truth® and on several social media platforms, it should be pointed out that despite the setbacks some cards have incurred, the Boxing cards have gone forward. While it remains to be seen whether this can be sustainable in the long-term especially if numbers in general regarding COVID-19 continue to increase both in terms of newly diagnosed cases and unfortunately deaths, for now the fact that promoters have been able to continue with their closed-door events even though a few fights have not taken place because of the virus, under the circumstances, it should be considered successful.

One of the primary criticisms I have heard from some fans however, has centered around a perceived lack of quality fights in the view of some. It is indeed understandable from a fan's perspective that they want to see as many competitive fights as possible and for those fights to be between the top fighters the sport has to offer. For several reasons, both related to the COVID-19 crisis as well as the economics of the sport, in some ways we are seeing a new dynamic in terms of hoe Boxing is being presented. One of the notable changes that has never been done before on traditional television platforms, but has been done regularly on digital streaming networks is every fight on a scheduled card has been televised. Although this is something that I have strongly advocated for over the years, particularly in regard to the overpriced and outdated model of pay-per-view in my belief that  for the prices consumers are consistently asked to pay for those events, for those who have never experienced a full Boxing card, it can be an adjustment as full cards usually feature fighters who may not always have the opportunity to benefit from television exposure. This along with many of those fighters not being able to devote themselves fulltime to Boxing for financial reasons as well as styles of fighters not always meshing into entertaining encounters and thus can lead to a perverted lack of quality of some fights in the eyes of some. It should also not be overlooked the challenges that promoters and matchmakers have periodically during normal circumstances throughout the sport. The difficulties/challenges they face are likely increased significantly under circumstances of an ongoing epidemic.

There has however, been good that has come out of an extremely bad situation for the world. Beyond providing potential opportunity to fighters that may not have had the benefit of television exposure before, technology has also provided a method for lesser known and regional promoters to have an opportunity to stay afloat during these difficult times when there is no opportunity to earn revenue from live gate income.

A consistent theme of this observer’s work over the last several years has been the benefits that Over The Top (OTT) digital distribution or in simple language streaming can provide not just Boxing, but all of sports. The advent of digital subscription sports streaming networks such as DAZN and ESPN+ have proven that the model of streaming can be quite lucrative and provide in some cases more revenue as compared to traditional television distribution. While networks like DAZN and ESPN+ have secured lucrative content agreements with some of Boxing’s major promotional players, for lesser known regional promoters, the benefits of streaming now provides a source of revenue while not having the option to stage public events by staging economically priced cards through streaming networks like FightNightLive, who stream events via Facebook, FITE TV, and Global Sports Streaming who stream both Boxing and MMA events via YouTube.

This not only provides a route of revenue for lesser known and regional promoters around the world, but also to grow their respective audiences rather than relying strictly on traditional distribution platforms. While this is something I have been very vocal about in advocating for in addition to feeling that broadcasting every fight on a card is not only technologically possible, but adds more value for consumers/fans, some within the sport have been resistant to adapting to the changing landscape. It is my hope that if there is good that will come from this epidemic from a business standpoint, that promoters continue to recognize where technology is heading and adapt with it rather than trying to fight against it in favor of declining cable/satellite television distribution. It will only help expose the sport to more eyes globally and in the process grow Boxing and it’s reach.

Now that I’ve spent the majority of this column sharing my thoughts on a wide range of subjects related to Boxing under the circumstances of COVID-19, allow me to share some of my view on the return of WBC Jr. Lightweight world champion Miguel Berchelt. A return that took place on June 27th in Mexico City, Mexico.

Berchelt, who last competed prior to the COVID-19 epidemic in November of last year in a successful title defense in stopping contender Jason Sosa in four rounds, returned to the ring in a non-title bout fought in the 135lb. Lightweight division. The opposition for the Jr. Lightweight world champion was veteran Eleazer Valenzuela. Valenzuela, a veteran of forty-seven professional fights prior to this encounter appeared to be an opponent that would allow Berchelt to test the waters of the Lightweight division with a potential of moving into the division full time in the future.

This had all the appearance of what some would refer to as a “Tune Up” for Berchelt as the Jr. Lightweight world champion dictated the combat from the outset. A flush left hook to the head sent Valenzuela down late in round one. Although Valenzuela was able to continue, Berchelt continued to administer what frankly quickly became a one-sided beating. After four rounds, I felt the fight should have been stopped. Despite sustaining significant punishment, Valenzuela was very “Game “ and continued coming forward. While no one can take away the bravery of Valenzuela, I felt that the longer the fight went on, the more the possibility existed of potential long-term damage for him.

The end of the fight came in round six when a combination of unanswered punches to the head finally forced Referee Cesar Castanon to stop the fight. Although there frankly is not much to say or analyze about this fight, Berchelt did put forth an impressive performance in a new weight class in scoring his sixth consecutive knockout.

While what may or may not take place in the months ahead in the sport will largely be dictated by the circumstances of COVID-19, hopefully promoters will be able to not only continue to put on cards, but also be able to find some middle ground as far as being able to provide bouts that will hopefully be seen as competitive in the eyes of Boxing fans. Although fans can be hard to please under normal circumstances, the fan needs to keep in mind that these are far from normal circumstances and as the possibility exists that things may be halted again because of this virus, the possibility also exists that some of Boxing’s top stars might opt to wait until circumstances allow for public events to resume where economically those fighters will theoretically be able to earn the type of paydays most stars of the sport are accustomed to and thus fights that have significant interest might take longer to come to fruition.

In the meantime, there remains opportunity for notable rising stars like Miguel Berchelt to take advantage of a bad global crisis by looking to stay active when they can.  For fighters who haven’t been able to garner television exposure throughout their careers, the circumstances of COVID-19 presents the opportunity to not only increase their notoriety, but also potentially grow their standing within the sport and that could very well lead to more lucrative opportunities in the future once circumstances allow for Boxing and the rest of the world to return to normal everyday activity. For now, it’s a combination of both waiting out the worst of circumstances, enjoying what we do have access to, and being patient while waiting for fights that have public demand to be made.
