Bernaldez To Fight In U.S. On July 14th

Mark Bernaldez L/ Erick De Leon R Credit: Sanman Promotions
Press Release: June 9, 2018 by Sanman Promotions – Mark Bernaldez will be strutting his wares in the United States when he takes on unbeaten fighter Erick De Leon on July 14th at the Lakefront Arena, New Orleans, Louisiana. The huge break came more than three months after Bernaldez signed up with the General Santos City-based Sanman Promotions.

“I am very excited to fight for the first time in the USA,” said Bernaldez, who signed up with Sanman last March. Bernaldez (16W-1L-0D, 11KOs) and De Leon (17W-0L-1D, 10KOs) will square off in a 10-round super featherweight duel on a card promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank.

“It is every boxer’s dream in the Philippines to fight in the USA especially in a big card with Top Rank. I will do everything to win this fight. I would like to thank Sanman boxing for this big opportunity and I will train very hard for this,” said Bernaldez, who fought for ALA Boxing Gym before joining Sanman. Bernaldez last saw action in April 28 that saw him knocking out JP Macadumpis in Glan Saranggani, Province.

The impressive win marked the end of Bernaldez’s long hiatus as that was his first fight since losing to Tsuyoshi Tameda via technical knockout on August 5, 2018 in Japan. While his next fight is against an undefeated fighter, Sanman Promotions CEO Jim Claude Manangquil is upbeat of Bernaldez’s chances. “I think this is a very winnable fight for Bernaldez. Erick De Leon is a great fighter but I think his style is suited for Mark,” said Manangquil.

Can Horn Continue To Answer His Critics By Pulling Off Another Upset?

One of the bigger stories of 2017 in the sport of Boxing was the emergence of undefeated Welterweight contender Jeff Horn, who scored what many felt was a shocking and controversial upset of future Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao in July of last year in Horn’s hometown of Brisbane, Australia. Despite putting forth a “Game” effort in defeating Pacquiao via twelve round unanimous decision to win the WBO Welterweight world championship, Horn was not given the credit or the respect normally shown to a world champion following the fight. This was due largely to the opinion of some that he had benefited from a “Bad” or “Corrupt” decision.

In this observer’s coverage of that fight, I called the encounter known as “The Battle Of Brisbane” “A Great Fight With A Shadow Of Controversy.” While I believed Pacquiao had done enough to retain his world championship, it was a shame that such a grueling battle between two world-class fighters would be more known for the “Controversy” in regard to the scoring in the eyes of some instead of the great fight that took place. I also stated as I have done over the years when similar “Controversies” emerge that there is always a remedy “A Rematch.”

Although the outcome of Pacquaio-Horn seemed to create the ideal scenario that would warrant a second encounter, a rematch between the two did not materialize. The new champion would instead make the first defense of his crown in December of last year when he faced WBO number ten rated contender Gary Corcoran in Brisbane, Australia. Horn dominated the fight stopping the “Game” Corcoran in eleven rounds.

This victory for Horn, his eighteenth of nineteen bouts as a professional set up an opportunity to attempt to further answer his detractors by facing another elite fighter with “Superstar” status in the sport. The undefeated two-division world champion Terence Crawford.

Crawford, a native of Omaha, NE has won world championships in the 135lb. Lightweight and 140lb. Jr. Welterweight divisions, amassing a record of 32-0, with 23 Knockouts. In his last fight, Crawford successfully unified the Jr. Welterweight division to become the Undisputed Jr. Welterweight world champion by scoring an impressive third round knockout over previously unbeaten fellow unified Jr. Welterweight world champion Julius Indongo in Lincoln, NE. Crawford’s reign as the one and only Jr. Welterweight world champion was short as he soon vacated the WBC, WBO, IBF, and WBA crowns to set his sights on a third weight class, the 147lb. Welterweight division.

Crawford, per his being a world champion of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) at a lower weight prior to his decision to move up in weight, was named the number one mandatory challenger for Jeff Horn in a bout that was scheduled to take place in April of this year.  As many Boxing fans know, the bout was postponed due to a hand injury suffered in training by Crawford. The bout was rescheduled and will take place on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

Beyond this being an intriguing clash between undefeated world champions, this fight will all be one of the highlights of ESPN’s recently launched subscription streaming service ESPN+ in the United States. A digital network that has in it’s nearly two months of existence featured Boxing prominently.

A battle between two offensive-minded fighters that has the appearance on paper of being an entertaining fight. What will be of interest in this fight to this observer will be what approach the champion will take. Horn is a fighter that likes to come forward and apply consistent pressure on his opponent while looking to set up opportunities to land a focal point of his offense, his right hand. What can be overlooked about Horn’s offense however, is he can mix his offense up to the head and body by landing combinations and has also shown that he can keep a fighter at distance and unable to be effective throughout his career.

Horn does have the theoretical advantage of being the naturally bigger fighter, who is fighting at his natural weight against a fighter who will be competing as a Welterweight for the first time. Despite a one-inch height advantage over Crawford, the challenger has a two-inch reach advantage.

One thing that I believed was a contributing factor in Horn’s world championship victory over Manny Pacquiao was that although Pacquiao appeared to outwork him over the course of the fight, Horn did succeed in bringing the fight to Pacquiao and was able to back him up. Although one might expect Horn to use a similar approach in this fight, it is important to keep in mind that Terence Crawford is a world-class counter puncher who has a good mix of hand speed, punching power, and is effective in being able to switch stances to keep an opponent off-balance and unable to execute their offense effectively.

The story of this fight in my eyes will center on whether Horn will be able to effectively disrupt Crawford’s ability to get into a rhythm as he was able to do at points in his fight with Pacquiao and whether he can deal with Crawford’s hand speed and ability to adjust as the fight progresses. For Crawford the two-part question that will be asked of him in this fight is the same as all fighters who move up in weight. How will his body respond to fighting at a higher weight and how will he respond to being hit by naturally bigger fighter. It is also normal to ask whether his punches will be as effective or perhaps more effective at the higher weight than has been the case in lower weight classes.

Of course, Crawford was dominant in the Lightweight and Jr. Welterweight divisions and will come into this fight with a slightly higher career knockout percentage of 72% in thirty-two professional bouts as compared to Horn’s 69% in nineteen professional fights. A fair question to ask given the statistics of the two fighters is what effect will Crawford’s punches have on Horn when he lands.

Despite the “Controversy” surrounding his victory over Manny Pacquiao, Jeff Horn is after all an undefeated fighter who only has a technical draw that he earned in his fourth pro fight against Rivan Cesaire in 2013 as an official question mark on his record. Although Horn will be facing a fighter with considerable pedigree and more experience as was the case when he faced Pacquiao, the champion had scored wins over former world champions Randall Bailey and Ali Funeka prior to that fight so while Horn’s resume is shorter in comparison to fighters like Pacquiao and Crawford, he does have an impressive one. Some may question whether facing another fighter regarded as a superstar in the sport and wanting to answer those who have been critical of him because of the outcome of the Pacquiao fight, if Horn will be overly aggressive from the outset in looking to make a statement in what will be another career defining fight for him.

A fight with a storyline of an underdog world champion looking to further establish himself as a player in the sport against a fighter seeking his third world championship in as many weight classes. A storyline that has been present in fights throughout Boxing history in various weight classes that has produced encounters that many consider classics.  While Crawford is likely to be a heavy favorite in this fight, a fighter with something to prove, who might feel underestimated and overlooked should always be considered dangerous.

In our recent Twitter Reader Poll we asked readers as to whom they felt would win this fight. 71% of voters who took part in the poll believe that it will be the challenger Crawford who will emerge victorious while 29% of voters feel that the champion Horn will come out on top and retain his world championship in what will be his second title defense. Whether or not the poll and/or discussion regarding the outcome of this fight will serve as an accurate illustration of what takes place in the ring is something no one can answer right now.

What the results of the poll do demonstrate however, could be a perception of how fans view the combatants prior to the fight, as well as lend credibility to the stance of some both fan and expert alike that despite his victory over Manny Pacquiao, Horn remains an underdog who is still an unknown to some particularly those who are casual fans of the sport. While it is true that Crawford is more known and has been able to benefit from international television exposure and does have a stellar resume, if Horn can again defy the odds, it will be time for those who have been critical of him to give credit where it’s due. Something that regardless of how one feels about the scoring of Horn’s fight with Manny Pacquiao, is frankly overdue in the eyes of this observer.

We will see what happens on Saturday night.

JASON “THE SMOOTH ONE” MOLONEY INKS MANAGERIAL DEAL WITH DRAGON FIRE BOXING

Jason Moloney Celebrates Victory Credit: Brock Ellis
Press Release: June 5, 2018 by Dragon Fire Boxing – WBA #2, WBO #3, IBF #11, WBC #11 ranked Jason Moloney (current WBA Oceania and Commonwealth Bantamweight Champion) has signed a multi-year managerial deal with Dragon Fire Boxing as he inches his way closer to a world title opportunity.

“Dragon Fire Boxing has guided my career to absolute perfection. Before I turned professional I was always warned that it was extremely important to make sure that I had the right people looking after me and honestly, I couldn’t be happier.

From the very beginning the direction has been clear; as I have continued to improve so have my opponents.

Each fight has been a step up and presented a tougher test than the previous fight which has allowed me to learn and properly develop as a fighter while being tested along the way.

Two fights ago I fought a solid world title challenger (Immanuel Naidjala) who had never been stopped; I was able to pass that test and stop the opponent within 3 rounds.

We then moved on to a tougher test in a former two time World Champion (Kohei Kono) and I was again able to stop this opponent inside the distance.

Now we plan to step up yet again and we hope to take on one of the current World Champions. It is my dream to become World Champion, my team and I have worked very hard to make this happen, and right now I believe we are ready!

The way that Dragon Fire has brought me along and continued to test me with a constant progression of challenging opponents means that I am now confident that we are ready to take on the best in the world and I believe we are good enough to beat them.

The ultimate goal is not only to become World Champions but to stay World Champions, unify the division, and defend our titles over a long period of time.” Says Moloney.

Dragon Fire Boxing is most well-known for WBA Fighter of the Decade Chris “The Dragon” John. Other fighters that Dragon Fire Boxing has trained and/or guided in the past include: -

·         Vic Darchinyan
·         Danny “The Green Machine” Green
·         “The Scorpion” Sakio Bika
·         “Action” Jackson Asiku
·         Daud “Cino” Yordan
·         Gairy “Superman” St Clair

“It has been a joy to work with Moloney since 2015, you couldn’t ask for a better person in and out of the ring. He embodies the same 3 D’s that Chris John lived by: dedication, discipline, and determination. Coming fresh off the six round demolition of former two time World Champion and Japanese legend Kohei Kono, Jason Moloney proved he is the next superstar of world boxing and we have big things coming up for Jason that we are hoping to release very soon.” Said Tony Tolj, Dragon Fire Boxing manager.

“We are now at a very exciting stage of my career and very close to achieving my dream of becoming World Champion.

I want to thank everybody who has supported me along the way and helped me get to this point in my career.

I am extremely lucky to have such amazing support. I hope to make you and all of the country proud by becoming Australia’s next World Champion.” Says Jason “The Smooth One” Moloney.

“I’m happy to be back in the winning column. The loss to Payano only made me a better fighter,” said Plania, who improved to 15W-1L-0D, 8Kos.
With the win over Lauza, Plania is now more upbeat in his desire to achieve his ultimate goal. “I will be a champion,” he said.
Sanman Promotions CEO Jim Claude Manangquil said the victory was a huge confidence booster for Plania. “It was a good tune-up fight for Plania to get his confidence back. Up next for him will be a regional title or a fight in the US” Manangquil said.

Team Sanman Outside The Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles, CA Credit: Sanman Promotions
Press Release: May 16, 2018 By Sanman Promotions – Team Sanman, headed by its top brass, arrived in Los Angeles, California, USA on Saturday night (PH time) for the much-awaited fight of one its prized fighters Romero "Ruthless" Duno. Jim Claude "JC" Mananquil, chief executive officer of Sanman Promotions, and Dexter Tan, chief finance officer of Sanman, arrived in LA via PAL Flight PR 102.

Together with Managquil and Tan was John Vincent Moralde, who is set to face American boxer Ismael Muwendo in the undercard of Jonas Sultan-Jerwin Ancajas fight on May 26 in Selland Arena in Fresno, California. The 22-year-old Duno will be battling Mexico's Gilberto Gonzales (26W-4L-0D, 22KOs) on May 17 at the Fantasy Springs Resort in California in Indio, California.

Duno (16W-1L-0D, 14KOs) is gunning for an eighth straight win that will brighten his chances of earning a shot at a world title belt. Duno has been on a tear since his magnificent US debut that saw him demolish erstwhile unbeaten Christian Gonzales via a second-round knockout in March last year. After Tying Hopkins, What Options Are Available For Gennady Golovkin?

The twentieth world championship defense of the Middleweight world championship reign of Gennady Golovkin represented an opportunity to add his name to the history book of Boxing. For if he were successful in defense of his crown he would equal the historic feat of future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins by tying the all-time record for most successful World Middleweight championship title defenses that Hopkins set during his reign that spanned from 1995-2005. Of course, there are other comparisons between the two.

As this observer pointed out prior to Golovkin’s twentieth title defense on May 5th, both Golovkin and Hopkins share the similarity of each having to establish their reign as a Middleweight world champion largely away from the main spotlight of the sport, and each of them arguably had to clean out the division before getting the opportunity to face fighters that most would consider to be stars of the sport. An argument can also be made that each faced opposition that most Boring fans did not regard highly for their respective twentieth title defense.

Some may recall following Bernard Hopkins’ knockout of Oscar De La Hoya to unify the IBF, WBC, WBA, and WBO Middleweight crowns in September 2004, Hopkins having faced and defeated one of the biggest stars in the sport at the time faced top Middleweight contender Howard Eastman in February of 2005. Despite being a top contender who entered the fight rated number one in the World Boxing Council (WBC) Middleweight ratings at the time, Eastman was not widely known to casual Boxing fans and his challenge of Hopkins was outright dismissed by some. Hopkins would go on to defeat Eastman via twelve round unanimous decision in what could be described simply as a great fighter plying his trade in a workmanlike performance.

Much as was the case for Hopkins, the undefeated Golovkin would also face an opponent treated with little regard by some as he defended his unified crown against longtime Jr. Middleweight contender and former world title challenger Vanes Martirosyan at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA. As most Boxing fans know, Martirosyan stepped in on short notice following the suspension of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the man who was originally scheduled to face Golovkin in a highly anticipated rematch of their controversial draw last September in Las Vegas.

While much like Oscar De La Hoya was one of the top stars of the sport during his time competing in the sport, Alvarez has acquired such status and the circumstances, which led to the scheduled rematch being cancelled has also resulted of criticism of both Alvarez and Golovkin. Although I discussed the circumstances of what led to the rematch falling through in previewing Golovkin’s fight against Martirosyan, what did not get much attention from yours truly prior to the bout was the criticism directed toward the champion Gennady Golovkin.

Criticism for primarily the selection of Golovkin’s opponent as some felt Golovkin could have chosen to make a defense against undefeated contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko, who is currently rated as the number one contender in the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Middleweight ratings, which would have made it one of Golovkin’s mandatory championship defenses. The primary reason why I did not touch much upon this subject was primarily due to the understanding that the circumstances were such that Golovkin was insistent on competing on the scheduled day of what would have been the Alvarez rematch and the limited time frame the parties involved had to first find an opponent and more specifically find an opponent that would be approved by the respective athletic commission with the limited time frame in mind. It should also not be overlooked that among the stresses that led up to the fight for the champion, the venue was also changed from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV to the StubHub Center on the same time frame. Circumstances that do not tend to resolve quickly.

While some Boxing fans may not know, understand the circumstances that surrounded this fight, or simply might not view Golovkin and his promoter’s choice of opposition as a “Popular” or “Appropriate” move and thus voiced their criticism, one should consider all of the above. The criticism notwithstanding, it was fair to question whether or not all of the above and what had to be a stressful period of time for Golovkin would have any negative effect on him in this fight.

In addition to the circumstances that surrounded this title defense, it was also interesting to see if Golovkin, a man who carved out a reputation as one of the sport’s feared “Knockout Artists” would look to reestablish that reputation after going the twelve round world championship distance in his last two fights. Prior to those two bouts, a unanimous decision over Daniel Jacobs and the draw over Alvarez, Golovkin had stopped twenty-three opponents consecutively.

Golovkin was also facing a man in Martirosyan who had been inactive for nearly two years and was fighting as a Middleweight for the first time after spending his entire career as a 154lb. Jr. Middleweight. As I pointed out in previewing this fight, it is as much an adjustment for the fighter who has a change in opponent on short notice as it is an adjustment for the fighter stepping in to take the fight with limited time to prepare. Although most would rightfully conclude that the challenger was in this instance at a disadvantage, Martirosyan was not intimidated by Golovkin and attempted to fight him. Despite this observer’s view that he needed to be an elusive target and look to offset Golovkin’s pressure attack by attempting to outbox the champion, Martirosyan was willing to stand and fight Golovkin.

As several previous Golovkin opponents have found out however, opting to stand and fight a fighter with the type of punching power that Gennady Golovkin has can have brutal consequences. Despite showing his mettle, Martirosyan could not avoid and withstand Golovkin’s power and a brutal barrage of punches sent the challenger down and brought an end to the fight in the second round.

Ultimately the twentieth title defense of Gennady Golovkin’s reign as a Middleweight world champion produced an outcome that was expected by many Boxing fans, despite the circumstances that led up to it. The reign of Bernard Hopkins atop the division came to a controversial end in his twenty-first title defense when he lost a twelve round split decision to Jermain Taylor in July 2005.

Of course, no one knows who might be able to derail Gennady Golovkin’s ongoing reign over the Middleweight division at the present time. The question of who will be Golovkin’s next opponent however, is one that will be a topic of discussion until there is an official announcement made. Some might be of the opinion that an effort should be made to remake the rematch between Golovkin and Saul Alvarez.

Although that may indeed be the “Popular” choice of Boxing fans, this observer disagrees. There is no doubt in my mind that Gennady Golovkin and Saul Alvarez will eventually square off for a second time. The fact however, is that the scheduled rematch was cancelled, not because of a fighter being injured in training as sometimes happens, but due to one fighter having tested positive for a banned substance. While there may be some who would say that the cancellation, financial fines, and suspension should be enough, a question this observer asks his readers is, if a fighter is fined, suspended, and loses a significant “Payday” due to the cancellation of a fight due to what was at the time a pending suspension with said fighter pulling out of the scheduled bout before said suspension became official, then why should there be a suspension if the fighter suspended will have the same opportunity that was before him prior to his suspension with perhaps even more financial benefits than would have been the case if the bout had taken place as originally scheduled?

Even though this observer is not intending to single out Saul Alvarez, I believe it sends the wrong message if the rematch were to occur shortly after Alvarez completes his suspension. The wrong message to the critics of the sport who routinely point out the flaws in Boxing and constantly ridicule the sport over questions of corruption, but more importantly the wrong message to the fans of the sport of Boxing, who tirelessly support the sport in good times and bad, many of whom felt cheated out of an expensive pay-per-view price by the outcome of the encounter between Golovkin and Alvarez.

What would be an alternative that would be more beneficial for the sport in the long-term? The logical alternative in my mind would be for Golovkin to fulfill his mandatory title defense obligations in order to keep his world championship unified and assuming he succeeds in those title defenses then look to finish unifying the Middleweight division by facing the winner of the upcoming WBO Middleweight world championship fight between undefeated champion Billy Joe Saunders and top contender Martin Murray, which is scheduled to take place in June.

This would allow the fighters who have earned number one contender’s status in each organization’s respective rankings rankings, who Golovkin holds world championships to get their respective title shots, but would also lead the way to determining one “Undisputed Middleweight World Champion.” It would also allow Alvarez time to not only get himself back in active competition once his suspension is served, but perhaps will also allow him time to demonstrate that the circumstances that led to his suspension will not occur again particularly among fans who have seen his suspension as an opportunity to question his previous accomplishments throughout his career. Whether such questions are fair is something that fans will make up their own minds about. If Alvarez does show that this suspension is not and should not be viewed as a reflection of his career by what he does going forward and if he can win a few fights while Golovkin tends to other business and if Golovkin continues to win, then the rematch should be remade.

While this alternative, which in this observer’s eyes is the “Right” thing to do and “Makes Sense“ with the long-term benefit of the sport in mind, I realize that there are some who will see what could be done in the short-term particularly  financially by remaking the rematch as soon as Alvarez completes his suspension and would not view the opinion of yours truly as the “Popular” option. There are times however, when what is "Right" for the sport in the long-term "Big" picture should take priority over what would be "Popular." This is one of those times.

For this flight we have flown over two very tough sparring partners from the Philippines, John Mark Apolinario and Raymond Tabugon. Both boys have been giving us fantastic work!

Both John Mark and Raymond have very similar styles to my opponent which has been a very valuable part of my preparation. We have been able to put together and work on a great game plan for May 19. I’m very happy with how I have been performing in the gym and I’m coming into this fight feeling very confident.

John Mark Apolinario is a very experienced and explosive fighter which has been fantastic sparring for me coming into the biggest fight of my career.
Having this high quality sparring throughout this preparation has been very valuable for us, I think I’m in the best form of my career and can’t wait to perform on May 19.” – Jason Moloney

Unbeaten Super Flyweight sensation WBA # 5, WBC #5, IBF #5 & WBO #10 Andrew “The Monster” Moloney (16-0, 10 Kos) defends his coveted WBA Oceania Title against former WBC World Title Challenger Richard Claveras 18 (15) – 3 (1)- 2.

“This has been the best training camp of my career.  I believe I have made some huge improvements with my boxing during this training camp and I’m really excited to show this on fight night.

For this camp we have flown over two filipino boxers, Raymond Tabugon and Mark John Apolinaro to help prepare us for this fight. They have given us great sparring and I am very happy with how I have been performing in the gym.

Both sparring partners have a lot of similarities to my opponent Richard Claveras. We couldn’t have asked for better sparring in preparation for this fight.

It has been great to spar against someone who I have previously fought. It has been a really good learning experience as I have been able to make adjustments and improve each time we have sparred.”  States Andrew “The Monster” Moloney.
