Aussie Prodigy "Action Jackson" England Cracks World Boxing Council's World Ratings

Press Release: July 16, 2020 By Dragon Fire Boxing - WBC Super Featherweight Asian Boxing Council "Action" Jackson England's (12-1) rise to stardom continued when he was officially named in the World Boxing Council (WBC) super featherweight top 40 on Wednesday.

The Western Australian -based prodigy was thrilled upon finding out about his new world ranking.

"I checked Facebook and saw that I had been tagged in a bunch of stuff about world rankings, and then I just couldn't believe it when I saw my name in the top 40, thats why manager is the best in the World" he said.

"That's a legitimate world ranking from a very high sanctioning body of the sport - to think about that is just insane.

"I'm over the moon about it."

I'm not afraid to fight anybody.

At just 22 years old, England has already made a name for himself on the global scene with 12 wins from his 13 bouts.

Now his top 40 ranking is set to open further doors.

Bigger opponents, bigger fight cards and more eyes on his bouts can be expected in the rising star's near future.

"It's exciting, because now you never know when someone in the top 20 or maybe the top 15 might take a look down the list and say they want to fight me.

"I'm not afraid to fight anybody, so if that opportunity comes, I'll be ecstatic."

But England's return to the ring could still be some time away, with WA's professional boxing scene still up in the air due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"I love boxing and I love putting on a show, so it's been a frustrating few months," he said.

"But that's just the way of the world at the moment. All I can do is train hard and be ready when we get the green light to fight again.

I have huge respect and admiration for the Moloney brothers and they are prime examples of what can happen and we have the same manager and The Tolj never ceased to amze everyone in the country what he can do. I'll make sure im just a phone call away"

Mayer Outboxes Joseph

Undefeated Women’s Jr. Lightweight contender Mikaela Mayer scored an impressive ten round unanimous decision over former two-time world title challenger Helen Joseph on Tuesday night at the MGM Grand Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. A fight that was originally scheduled for June 9th that was postponed due to Mayer testing positive for the  COVID-19 virus, was controlled by the unbeaten former United States Olympian from the opening bell. Showing little effects from the virus, Mayer used her longer reach to work off of her jab and keep Joseph on the outside where she was unable to be effective. While this was largely the story of the fight, Mayer also displayed a well-balanced attack throughout and rarely did not through a punch unless it was part of a combination. An impressive performance by Mayer from start to finish culminated with her winning a convincing unanimous decision. Official scores were: 99-91, and 100-90 (On two scorecards) all in favor of Mayer. Mikaela Mayer advances to 13-0, with 5 Knockouts. Helen Joseph falls to 17-5-2, with 10 Knockouts.

Also on this card:

Lightweight  prospect Ruben Cervera scored a six round unanimous decision over Clay Burns. In the first round, Cervera dropped Burns with a short counter left hook to the jaw in the opening seconds of the fight. The pattern of the bout consisted of Burns being the aggressor, but Cervera catching him with counter punches as he came forward. This in addition to Cervera landing the cleaner, more effective punches, is what allowed him to score a convincing unanimous decision. Official scores were: 58-56, and 59-54 (On two scorecards) in favor of Cervera. Ruben Cervera advances to 12-2, with 10 Knockouts. Clay Burns falls to 9-9-2, with 4 Knockouts.

Middleweight Clay Collard scored a second round knockout over Lorawnt Nelson. Collard found a home for his straight right hand late in round one and scored a knockdown of Nelson along the ropes. A similar scenario also took place in round two when Nelson was dropped for a second time with a straight right hand. This was followed by a third knockdown of Nelson with a left hook to the head. Although Nelson was able to get up following the third knockdown, he had no answer to keep Collard off of him and the bout was stopped at 1:57 of round two. Clay Collard advances to 8-2-3, with 3 Knockouts. Lorawnt Nelson falls to 5-4, with 4 Knockouts

In the opening bout of the evening, Super-Middleweight Javier Martinez successfully made his professional debut by outworking Jonathan Burrs over four rounds to earn a unanimous decision victory. All three judges scored the fight in Martinez’ favor 40-36. Javier Martinez advances to 1-0, with 0 Knockouts. Jonathan Burrs falls to 2-2, with 0 Knockouts.

As has been the case since the sport of Boxing began attempting to resume activity over the last month, this card took place under the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 virus. While Mikaela Mayer is among a select few to have had their fights postponed due to a positive test for the virus, she now stands as someone who has not only recovered from COVID-19, but has also shown at least in her case that she did not suffer adverse effects and off of this latest performance would appear to be inching closer to an opportunity at a world championship. With at least the intention of an increased presence for Women’s Boxing over the coming months, it will be interesting to see if the ongoing circumstances surrounding the virus globally will allow Mayer to possibly challenge for a world championship before the end of 2020.

It should not be overlooked however, that COVID-19 continues to be a determining factor in what does take place as two bouts that were scheduled for this card, a WBO Jr. Lightweight world championship bout between champion Jamal Herring and Jonathan Oquendo as well as a scheduled Featherweight bout between Eddie Vazquez and Luis Melendez were each postponed due to postive COVID-19 tests. While in the case of the Herring-Oquendo bout, it was the second time the bout has been postponed due to a positive test, it does underscore what will remain a significant issue and an obstacle in potential fights that could be made for the sport going forward especially as cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in the United States as well as around the world. We will keep readers updated on any developments as they become available as to any potential rescheduling that might occur.

Takam Outworks Forrest

Former Heavyweight world title challenger Carlos Takam scored a workmanlike ten round unanimous decision over fellow contender Jerry Forrest on Thursday night at the MGM Grand Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. In what was a uneventful bout, Takam was able to outwork Forrest over the course of the ten round bout, despite being bothered throughout the fight due to a cut on his right cheekbone that was caused by an accidental clash of heads while the fighters were in close. Perhaps because of this as well as fatigue as the bout progressed, Forrest was able to have some success down the stretch, but it was not enough to turn the scoring of the fight in his favor. Official scores were: 96-94, 97-93, and 98-92 all in favor of Takam. Carlos Takam advances to 39-5-1, with 28 Knockouts. Jerry Forrest falls to 26-4, with 20 Knockouts.

Also on this card:

Undefeated Jr. Featherweight contender Carlos Castro scored a dominant fourth round stoppage of former world title challenger Cesar Juarez. For four rounds, Castro displayed a full skill set highlighted by a consistent body attack. The always “Game “ Juarez simply could not find a way to break Castro’s rhythm and at the end of the fourth round after sustaining significant punishment, Juarez’ corner wisely stopped the fight to prevent their fighter from further punishment. Carlos Castro advances to 26-0, with 11 Knockouts. Cesar Juarez falls to 25-9, with 19 Knockouts.

In a battle of undefeated Jr. Lightweights Joshafat Ortiz scored a hard-fought six round majority decision over Joshua Orta. Ortiz seemed to be having his way early in the fight by using his longer reach to keep Orta on the outside. Orta was able to rally over the second half of the fight and appeared to get the better of the exchanges between the two. Although Ortiz suffered a cut over the right eye as a result of an accidental clash of heads in round five, his success early in the fight was enough to earn the nod of two official judges who scored the fight 58-56 in his favor while the third judge scored the fight a draw 57-57 giving Ortiz the majority decision victory. Joshafat Ortiz advances to 8-0, with 4 Knockouts. Joshua Orta falls to 6-1, with 2 Knockouts.

Middleweight Donte Stubbs, who fought one week ago at the same MGM Grand Conference Center in losing a close six round majority decision to Isiah Jones, was able to rebound from what was his first career loss to score a convincing six round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Fred Wilson. Although Stubbs initially hard trouble navigating Wilson’s longer reach was able to score a knockdown of Wilson in round three with a wide right hand to the head. Wilson was able to get up, but was deducted a point in round four for holding. Wilson would be dropped for a second time toward the end of round five from another right hand to the head. The two knockdowns, the point deduction, and Wilson’s inability to avoid Stubbs’ right hand allowed Stubbs to earn the decision. Official scores were 58-53 (On two scorecards) and 58-54 all in favor of Stubbs. Donte Stubbs advances to 7-1, with 2 Knockouts. Fred Wilson falls to 6-1-2, with 2 Knockouts.

In a Welterweight bout that began the evening in what was a rarity for the sport of Boxing that saw a double knockdown in the first round, Corey Champion scored a first round knockout over Peter Cortez. The fight, which took place before the nationally televised broadcast on ESPN in the United States, saw the two fighters each land a right hand at the same time resulting in a double knockdown. Champion was able to score two additional knockdowns of Cortez to force a stoppage of the fight. Corey Champion advances to 2-3, with 2 Knockouts. Peter Cortez falls to 2-2, with 1 Knockout.

Although the overall theme of Boxing under the circumstances of COVID-19 remains fighters looking to stay active in the hope of garnering further and potentially more lucrative opportunities once circumstances improve where the sport can resume in a way more similar to when it is in its normal active state, this card in particular provided a look at one fighter who is looking for another opportunity at a world championship. Thirty-nine year old Carlos Takam.

While speculating on what a fighter might do next is normally standard practice when the sport is operating as normal, it remains unrealistic currently due to the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 epidemic. For a fighter in Takam’s position however, the longer the sport remains in its current state of trying to operate behind closed doors where many top fighters might opt to wait for circumstances to improve both due to financial reasons as well as the risk of exposure to the virus, it could have a severe impact on Takam’s hopes of getting another opportunity to fight for a world championship. The flip side of that scenario however, is if Takam can remain active under these circumstances and continue to win, the likelihood of him being in condition to capitalize on an opportunity should it present itself will obviously increase compared to fighter and world champions who will try to wait the epidemic out. In a situation largely dictated by circumstances beyond the control of the powers that be in Boxing and a scenario where sports fans are eager for compelling stories, the story of Cards Takam is one to observe and keep an eye on.

Zepeda Defeats Castaneda In Las Vegas

Former world title challenger Jose Zepeda scored a lopsided ten round unanimous decision over prospect Kendo Castaneda on Tuesday night at the MGM Grand Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. Over the course of the Jr. Welterweight bout, Zepeda demonstrated a well-balanced attack, frequently mixing his offense to the body and head, consistently beating Castaneda to the punch, as well as displaying effective counter punching. A full display of Boxing skills that allowed Zepeda to box his way to a convincing unanimous decision victory. Official scores were: 97-93, and 98-92 (On two scorecards) in favor of Zepeda. Jose Zepeda advances to 32-2, with 25 Knockouts. Kendo Castaneda falls to 17-2, with 8 Knockouts.

Also on this card:

Jr. Lightweight Luis Lopez scored a hard-fought ten round split decision over highly touted prospect Andy Vences. In what was a closely fought bout from the outset, Lopez nearly ended the fight in round six when he staggered Vences with an uppercut to the head and proceeded to batter him with a barrage of punches. To his credit, Vences survived the barrage of punches and appeared to outwork Lopez down the stretch, despite suffering a cut over the left eye in round six from an accidental clash of heads. The three judges were split in their verdict at the conclusion of the ten round bout with all three turning in identical scores, but with two judges scoring the bout 96-94 in favor of Lopez. Luis Lopez advances to 21-2, with 11 Knockouts. Andy Vences falls to 23-2-1, with 12 Knockouts.

Undefeated Lightweight Eric Puente continued his winning ways with a four round majority decision over Diego Elizondo. Eric Puente advances to 3-0, with 0 Knockouts. Diego Elizondo falls to 2-2-2, with 0 Knockouts.

Rising Welterweight prospect Genaro Gamez scored a first round knockout of Reymond Yanong. The bout was stopped with one second remaining in round one. Genaro Gamez advances to 10-1, with 7 Knockouts. Reymond Yanong falls to 11-6-1, with 6 Knockouts.

Unbeaten Lightweight prospect Andres Cortes overcame a knockdown in round four to score a hard-fought eight round unanimous decision over Alejandro Salinas. This fight was one that saw both fighters engaging in exchanges from the opening bell. Cortes suffered a deep gash over the left eye in the second round as a result of an accidental clash of heads. Salinas scored the knockdown of Cortes with a short right hand to the head in the fourth round where it was ruled that the ropes kept Cortes from going down. Cortes was however, able to rally down the stretch to earn the decision win. Official scores were: 76-75, 79-73, and 77-74 all in favor of Cortes. Andres Cortes advances to 13-0, with 7 Knockouts. Alejandro Salinas falls to 10-4, with 5 Knockouts.

Undefeated Bantamweight prospect Gabriel Muratalla began the evening by scoring a hard-foght four round unanimous decision over veteran Sergio Lopez. Lopez began the bout by attempting to jump on Muratalla. Although Lopez was aggressive throughout the duration of the fight, Muratalla gradually landed the cleaner punches as well as countered Lopez effectively throughout to earn the unanimous decision victory. Official scores were: 39-37, and 40-36 (On two scorecards) in favor of Muratalla. Gabriel Muratalla advances to 4-0, with 3 Knockouts. Sergio Lopez falls to 4-6-3, with 0 Knockouts.

The consistent theme of Boxing cards and really all of sports that are trying as best as possible to resume during the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic is fighters/athletes looking to stay active under difficult circumstances. While several of the Boxing cards that have taken place over the last month can be described as fighters for the most part going through the motions, and this card falls in line with that description, there has also been instances where prospects and contenders have been tested. This card featured fighters ranging from the early stages of their careers to those who are nearing contender status having to face tests inside the ring. While for some they were able to come through successfully in those tests that will only help in their overall development, others experienced a setback. If circumstances regarding COVID-19 allow however, all of the above could be back in the ring in a relatively short time. We will have to wait and see not only whether circumstances will allow for the sport to remain active in some aspects, but also whether those circumstances will also make it possible for a more adequate discussion regarding what the respective plans for future bouts for the fighters that have been competing to occur in a more thorough form.

Thoughts On Pedraza-LesPierre

The Jr. Welterweight bout between two-division world champion Jose Pedraza and former world title challenger Mikkel LesPierre would under normal circumstances be a compelling encounter between one fighter, who is seeking an opportunity at a world championship in a third weight class after successfully winning world championships as a Jr. Lightweight and Lightweight, against a fighter who’s lone career defeat came in a failed bid to win a world championship. As many Boxing fans know however, the sport and the world as a whole are in far from normal times and circumstances due to the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic.

A seemingly well-matched encounter between the two top Jr. Welterweight contenders would serve as a reminder of that fact as the bout, which was originally scheduled to take place on June 18th at the MGM Grand Convention Center was cancelled on the morning of the closed-door event when it was revealed that a member of LesPierre’s team had tested positive for the COVID-19 virus and under the protocols set by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), the bout was immediately cancelled. Despite so much uncertainty regarding the virus and how various sports are going to be able to resume activity and the potential of activity being halted at any time because of the ongoing epidemic, Pedraza-LesPierre also served as an example of how a setback in fights taking place can be rectified in a relatively short time.

After the fighters and their respective teams all tested negative for the virus, the fight finally took place on July 2nd at the same MGM Grand Convention Center. Despite how this fight appeared on paper, it was logical to question what effect the temporary cancellation would have on both fighters in addition to wondering how both fighters were able to prepare for the bout. After all, the current circumstances the world finds itself in because of this virus has caused stress, anxiety, and worry for many, the same holds true for fighters as well. It should also be noted that in the case of LesPierre, he has been combating the virus on the front lines as one of many hospital workers throughout the United States. Although most fans could assume that a fighter in LesPierre’s position as a top contender would be able to devote themselves full time to Boxing, it is not always the case. Nevertheless, it was curious to see how LesPierre would be able to balance his status as an essential worker under circumstances of an epidemic with his ongoing efforts in the Boxing ring and how the cancellation would factor into how he was able to prepare for this fight.

It became clear from early on in the fight that it would be Pedraza, who was less impacted by the circumstances, which this fight took place. The former world champion established the tempo of the combat by throwing consistent combinations, but also changing levels in mixing his attack of LesPierre to the body and head. Pedraza, as he has done in previous fights, also switched between an orthodox and southpaw stance throughout. Such tactics made it very difficult for LesPierre to get into a consistent offensive rhythm . This does not mean however, that LesPierre was not competitive as he and Pedraza traded flash knockdowns in the fifth round off the scheduled ten round bout.

Pedraza would reestablish control of the fight following the fifth round and would score a second knockdown of LesPierre in the tenth and final round to seal a convincing unanimous decision victory. Although this was a dominant performance by Jose Pedraza and at times fights that are fought in this way do not lend much in the way of thorough analysis beyond a summary of what took place, it was still an impressive performance by Pedraza and really both fighters under the circumstances.

While this observer would love to provide some thoughts regarding what both fighters might do coming out of this fight, it is important to stress once more as I have done in previous coverage of Boxing cards that have taken place over the last month since the sport began the process of attempting to resume under the circumstances of COVID-19 that these are far from normal circumstances and the reality that some may not want to hear or accept is any and all activity in the sport of Boxing as well as all sports and entertainment ventures will continue to be largely dictated by the ongoing situation of the COVID-19 virus. It thus becomes a seemingly impossible task to speculate on what potential fights could be made and when they might take place.

It is important for any cynics/critics however, to remember that the fighters who are competing are doing so not only for the opportunity the circumstances of this virus has presented in a round about way, but are also doing so knowing the potential risks involved. Although Mikkel LesPierre came out on the short end of this fight, it should not be overlooked that the initial cancellation of his fight against Jose Pedraza as well as his status as an essential worker in helping to administer medical care to patients battling the COVID-19 virus as well as the uncertainty of everything, he would have been fully within his rights to decline rescheduling the fight so soon and in the eyes of yours truly, would have been justified in doing so if that were his choice. While we are glad to see Boxing resuming in some form, there are more important things in life than the pursuit of world championships and becoming an all-time great in any sport. The fact that LesPierre chose to get this fight in the ring as soon as possible as well as Jose Pedraza being willing to do so as well when all too often when circumstances prevent fights from taking place for one reason or another can lead to both gamesmanship and further delays, deserves the utmost respect from everyone involved in the sport of Boxing. An example that one can only hope others follow even after the COVID-19 epidemic ends, whenever that might be.

Fonseca returns to the ring on August 4 in Nicaragua on a Buffalo Boxing card live on national TV in the country that has produced legendary fighters such as Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez. Dragon Fire Boxing's Tolj opened up about the plans for Fonseca going forward.

It will be on a Buffalo Boxing Promotion and they have been a mainstay promotion in the region for close to two decades now. He will box in front of millions on national television, so this is a really good opportunity for him against a good opponent.

"The plan is to continue to develop Fonseca into a position where the right opportunities will come.
