Updated Coronavirus Boxing-Related Cancellations/Postponements 4/26/2020

As the Covid-19/Coronavirus epidemic continues to impact the world, the sport of Boxing has continued to see postponements and cancellations. Over the last week, the Japanese Professional Boxing Commission (JBC) and the Japanese Professional Boxing Association (JPBA) announced an extension of its previous announcement of not staging any professional or amateur Boxing and other combat sports events through the month of May to now cover the month of June.  Similarly, promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank Inc has cleared his company’s scheduled events through the month of June.

The Florida Boxing Hall of Fame (FBHOF) has announced that it’s annual induction weekend, which was scheduled to take place during the month of June in Tampa, FL, has been rescheduled to August 21st-23rd, 2020 and will still take place at the Westshore Grand Hotel in Tampa, FL. For more information about the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame please visit: www.floridaboxinghalloffame.com

Although numerous promoters have hinted at the possibility of resuming their respective scheduled events behind closed doors with no crowds, there have been no official announcements as of this writing. There was however, one Boxing card that took place in Managua, Nicaragua on Saturday night at the Polideportivo Alexis Arguello. Fans attending the event observed social distancing guidelines and everyone attending the event were required to wear face masks with the exception of fighters who were competing. It is obviously unclear as to whether this card, which was promoted by former two-division world champion Rosendo Alvarez’ Bufalo Boxing Promotions, will serve as somewhat of a blueprint for the sport as to how events will be staged once things are allowed to resume in various portions of the world.

As has become the norm during this epidemic, we will continue to keep readers updated as to any cancellations/postponements, and rescheduling in condensed-form. Additional Boxing-related content sent to us from promoters and networks for release will continue to be made available.

Updated Coronavirus Boxing-Related Postponements/Cancellations 4/20/2020

As the world continues to deal with the Coronavirus epidemic, Boxing-related information has become somewhat sporadic due largely to several Boxing promoters globally heeding the advice of government officials to postpone or cancel their upcoming scheduled cards that has seen several months of what would normally be an active Boxing schedule become inactive. Over the last week however, there was some news that can be seen as both controversial as well as provide a potential path forward towards the resumption of combat sports including Boxing.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis deemed World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) as an essential service on April 13th. This allows WWE, as one of the few entities that has been able to remain active during the epidemic, to continue producing television content from its performance center training facility in Orlando, FL. What makes this a potential path for Boxing and  other combat sports to resume within the state is that events could theoretically be held in a similar fashion to what WWE has done in producing their television programming in a closed set without an audience. While there is no word as of this writing as to any potential cards that could take place, Spanish language television network Telemundo has announced that it has postponed its planned Boxeo Telemundo spring series choosing instead to air classic content on its network throughout the month of May.

Although  there remains optimism amongst both promoters and networks across the world that Boxing will be able to resume in the coming months, a dilemma that all will likely face will be whether or not to stage cards without spectators, which may effect financial figures for all involved. As of this writing, major sports leagues around the world have not officially announced plans to resume their respective schedules however Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Hockey League (NHL), and the National Basketball Association (NBA) remain in discussions regarding potential plans.

We will continue to keep readers updated in condensed-form on Boxing-related information as it becomes available.

Updated Coronavirus Boxing-Related Postponements/Cancellations 4/6/2020

Over the last week, the Boxing world has continued to see a significant interruption in what would otherwise be an active schedule throughout the entire sport due to the ongoing Coronavirus epidemic. Among the announcements over the last week were an announcement that the Japanese Professional Boxing Commission (JBC) intended to resume its schedule of events in Japan during the month of May. Soon after making their intention known, the commission reverted to its existing decree that Boxing in the country would not be resuming until further notice.

This was followed by announcement made by Sampson Boxing that their scheduled April 24th card in Las Vegas, NV at the Cannery Casino and Hotel has been postponed. Following up on their previous announcement that they have cancelled all of their scheduled events during the month of April, Matchroom Boxing has cancelled all of their scheduled events for the month of May as well as postponed the scheduled World Heavyweight championship fight between Anthony Joshua and mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev, which was scheduled to take place in England in June. As of this writing, no intended rescheduled date has been announced.

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has continued its ban of all combat sports events through the the month of May. This has subsequently caused a second postponement of the planned Jr. Welterweight world championship fight between unified WBC/WBO world champion Jose Ramirez and former WBC world champion Viktor Postol, which was originally scheduled to take place during the month of January in Haikou, China. The intended rescheduled date of May 9th in Fresno, CA will now be postponed to a date and venue that has not been announced as of this writing.

The 2020 International Boxing Hall of Fame weekend originally scheduled for the June 11th-14th in Canastota, NY has been postponed. The class of 2020 will be inducted along with the 2021 class during the 2021 Hall of Fame induction weekend scheduled for June 10th-13th, 2021. Similarly, the Illinois Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremony scheduled for Friday, April 24th has been postponed. As of this writing, no rescheduled date has been announced.

England opened up about his first WBC title victory, “I am absolutely over the moon to become a champion with the WBC and I’d like to thank the WBC for giving me the opportunity to fight for the title and I really feel that I put on a performance that is worthy of contesting a WBC title.

“I was very happy with my performance and I believe it was one of the best of my career. I want to thank everybody at the Onyx fight team for getting me ready for all of my fights. I think I’m improving all the time and the my results would suggest that, so I am really grateful to the team for what they’ve done in the gym with me.

“I also have to say a massive thank you to my manager The Big Boss Man, Tony Tolj and Dragon Fire Boxing who continue to deliver me top class opportunities which is unprecedented for a fighter of my age and experience as a professional.”

England now adds the WBC Asia title to his Australian featherweight title and the 22-year-old discussed his plans now moving forward in the professional ranks.

England said, “I have got the taste for titles now so hopefully next time out I can fight for another title or defend my WBC title. Either way I’d like to remain at title level and continue to work my way up the world rankings as my goal is to go all the way in the boxing game.

“My first focus is making sure my family and loved ones remain healthy during the COVID-19 outbreak, but after this situation clears up I want to be straight back into title action and I believe I have the right team to get me ready for whatever is next and I know Tony Tolj will continue to get me great opportunities and I'm ready for anyone, anywhere, anytime.”

Updated Coronavirus Boxing-Related Cancellations/Postponements 3/27/2020

In addition to the announcement earlier this week by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that the scheduled 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan has been postponed until 2021 due to the ongoing Coronavirus epidemic, the sport of Boxing has continued to see postponements and cancellations made due to the virus.  Among the announcements made this week were an announcement by the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) group of promoters that it has cancelled all its scheduled events through the month of May. The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has also announced that it has suspended sanctioning bouts through the month of June. This likely was a contributing reason in the scheduled May 9th Undisputed Women’s Middleweight world championship fight between champion Claressa Shields and Marie Dicaire, which was scheduled to take place in Flint, MI as the main event of a Showtime televised Boxing card here in the United States. The promoter of the card, Salita Promotions has not announced a possible rescheduled date as of this writing. Rounding out the announcements as of this writing this week, the scheduled Atlantic City Hall of Fame induction weekend, which was scheduled to take place in Atlantic City, NJ between June 26th-28th has been postponed until the fall of the year on dates yet to be announced. For more information about the Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Fame please visit: https://www.acbhof.com/

In an effort to gather as much information as possible regarding postponements/cancellations, and potential rescheduling, updates will continued to be released in condensed-form once per week until such time as the Boxing schedule can resume. As announced last week however, while it is not appropriate under the present circumstances to present readers with the type of content and information that they are accustomed to when the sport is in its normal active state, any and all Boxing-related content sent to us in the form of press releases/announcements from promoters and television/streaming networks will continue to be made available to readers while the sport, much like the rest of the world, waits for things to get back to normal. We will continue to do our best to keep readers informed regarding postponements/cancellations and we thank our readers again for their continued patience during this unintended pause in the Boxing schedule.

Aussie Dylan Winter signs with Dragon Fire Boxing

Press Release: March 26, 2020 By Dragon Fire Boxing - Light Heavyweight Dylan ‘Soldier’ Winter has signed with Oceania management juggernauts Dragon Fire Boxing as he looks to continue his progression in the professional ranks.
Credit: Dragon Fire Boxing

Winter has reached 3-0 as a professional, with his last outing seeing him defeat amateur sensation and unbeaten Perth based Serbian Vasilije Radovic via a unanimous decision, in what many deemed Winter to be a long shot.

Winter opened up about his recent victory and his plans moving forward.

Winter said, “I was really happy with my last fight on the Thunderdome 33 event in Metro City, Perth, and thank you to Tony Tolj for getting me on and allowing me to show off skills in one of the featured fights. The Thunderdome series is an iconic part of Australian boxing so to be able to compete on these events really means a lot to me.

“Radovic had reportedly gone to Cuba for a training camp and he came to win but I knew I’d be too much for him and I proved that in the fight. People can underestimate me all the want but I’ve shown when I get in there they are facing someone with the attitude of stone cold killer.

“I want to continue to be in these real fights and give people value for money when I fight. I hav great support so anyone who fights me will be in for a frosty reception.”

Winter is now under the guidance of Australian boxing chieftain Tony Tolj, and Winter weighed in on his decision to sign with one of Australia’s mainstays.

Winter trains with "Big Rig" Dayle Phillips and will be mentored by trainer of WBA Fighter of the decade Chris "The Dragon" John

‘The Winter Soldier’ stated, “To link up with Tony Tolj who was an integral part of the rise of one of my heroes Chris John is massive for me and I’d like to thank Tony and the team at Dragon Fire Boxing for giving me this opportunity.

“Tony always gets great opportunities for his fighters and I believe he’ll do the same for me. I believe I have titles in me and when the time is right titles will come. I can promise everyone who faces me they will be iced because I work so hard and I’m already proving that I don’t freeze on the big stages and I'm gonna make some noise in the light heavyweight division.”

Updated Coronavirus Boxing-Related Cancellations/Postponements 3/20/2020

The ongoing Coronavirus epidemic has continued to result in several cancellations and postponements in the sport of Boxing around the world. It was announced earlier this week that all combat sports events along with non-essential businesses have been shut down in the state of Nevada for thirty days. This has followed similar decisions made by the British Boxing Board of Control, who ruled in accordance with the British government to cancel all combat sports events for the remainder of March and April. This has resulted in several notable promoters including Matchroom Boxing, MTK Global, and Queensberry Promotions all cancelling their scheduled events. SES Boxing in Germany has also announced the cancellation of the scheduled March 28th card headlined by a Light-Heavyweight bout between Zac Dunn and Dominic Boesel has also been cancelled.

The epidemic has also begun affecting scheduled Boxing cards in the country of Australia, who has cancelled all events in the New South Wales region until May 18th. The cancellations include promoter Tony Tolj’s Dragon Fire Boxing’s scheduled BoxingMania 9 event scheduled for March 27th, Team Ellis’ Boxing’s scheduled event for tomorrow (March 21st), and the scheduled April 22nd event at Queensland Country Bank Stadium headlined by a bout between former world champion Jeff Horn and Tim Tszyu. Similarly, live Boxing cards promoted by Zanfer Promotions and Box Azteca in Mexico have been suspended until further notice.

Cancellations throughout the sport also include the scheduled April 25th Golden Boy Promotions/Main Events promoted card headlined by a Light-Heavyweight bout between Sergey Kovalev and Sullivan Barrera, which was to take place at the Fantasy Springs Resort in Indio, CA, the scheduled April 11th card at the O2 Arena in London, England promoted by Queensberry Promotions headlined by a Heavyweight bout between Joe Joyce and Daniel Dubois. The Joyce-Dubois event has however, been rescheduled for Saturday, July 11th and will still take place at the O2 Arena. Promoter Bob Arum’s Top Rank, Inc. has also announced that the scheduled March 28th card headlined by a World Light-Heavyweight championship fight between champion Artur Beterbiev and IBF number one rated contender Meng Fanlong, which was to take place at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada has also been cancelled.

The New York State Boxing Hall of Fame has also announced that their annual induction ceremony and dinner, which was scheduled for April 19th, will now take place on September 20th at Russo’s On The Bay in Howard Beach, NY. Information regarding the event can be found on the official website of the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame: www.NYBoxingHOF.org

Due to the uncertainty regarding the Coronavirus epidemic, content here on The Boxing Truth®️ will remain in condensed-form in an effort to keep readers informed regarding cancellations and rescheduling of Boxing-related events. Although it would not be appropriate under the present circumstances to provide readers with the type of content and information that they are accustomed to when the sport is in its normal active state, Boxing-related content sent to us in the form of press releases/announcements from promoters and television/streaming networks will continue to be made available to readers while the sport, much like the rest of the world, waits for things to get back to normal.
