On Friday, October 2nd the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, FL will play host to the next step in the career of undefeated Jr. Middleweight Omari Jones as the unbeaten prospect will headline a card in his hometown as he will face veteran Alan Sanchez in a scheduled eight round bout that can be seen worldwide on digital subscription sports streaming network DAZN. This will mark the eighth professional fight in Jones’ career.
The former Olympic Bronze medalist in the 2024 Paris Olympics, Jones turned professional in March of last year and has compiled seven straight wins with four coming via knockout. As has been the case for numerous former Olympians throughout Boxing history, it would seem that due to their Olympic exposure, they are often put on a fast track towards eventually contending for a world championship after becoming professionals. Thus far in his career, Jones has succeeded against relatively obscure opposition, which is not unusual for a fighter at the early stages of their career. In his previous two outings, Jones was made to go eight rounds each in bouts that he won convincing decisions.
Now, for his eighth pro bout and fourth time competing at the Caribe Royale Resort, he moves into the position of headlining a card for the first time as he faces Alan Sanchez. Sanchez, a native of Jalisco, Mexico is a veteran of thirty-two professional fights and will come into this encounter with a record of 24-7-1, with 10 Knockouts. This on paper will be the first opponent Jones has faced with a significant experience advantage in terms of professional experience.
While Sanchez has more time inside the professional ring than Jones has had fights, What could potentially be a red flag is in his seven defeats, Sanchez has been stopped three times, and will also go into this fight off of a knockout loss in his last outing, being stopped in four rounds by Nicklaus Flaz in May of last year. With over a year of inactivity, it will be on Sanchez to show he is capable of providing a test for the twenty-three year old Jones.
Although this noted Boxing scribe cannot recall having previously seen Sanchez in action amongst the numerous bouts and cards this observer has covered over the years, in viewing his record, Sanchez appears to have been a little hot and cold in terms of wins and losses. In that there was one point in his career where he suffered two consecutive knockout losses, but then went on a winning streak where he won three straight bouts, all decision victories, before suffering his next defeat, which also came via decision. Most recently, he has gone 4-2 in his last six outings. Despite having a winning mark coming into this fight in this six bouts, it would not be hard to understand how some may view this encounter as being designed to be a showcase for Jones in his hometown as he takes a step towards professional prospect status, rather than highly touted former Olympic medalist.
For Omari Jones, this is his next step forward against a more experienced opponent, but it is also his opportunity to show that he can be an attraction as a headliner, which goes a long way and may be in some eyes of more importance than any performance inside the ring depending on one’s perspective. What this will also do for Jones is likely determine whether or not his level of competition will increase in subsequent fights as 2027 approaches as one may assume the aim will likely be to at minimum, to get him into the world rankings if not in a position to challenge for a world championship by the end of next year.
